Topic: Shakiness! Any tips? Very important!

When ever I perforum I ALWAYS get shaky. But I think its audriline. (not nerves) So do you guys have ANY tips on how to stop my hands form shakying? That would really help me alot because in past few months I go in out of magic becuase of my shakyness. And I even gave up becuase of my shakyness, yeah it's true to one day I went "that's it I'm getting tired of this shakyness!" and quit for about a month. I'm kind of in to magic still but majoraty of the reason I don't perforum is bcuase of my shakyness.

Really I need your help, it just doesn't make magic fun if my hands are shakeing.

I have found that by watching my breathing and making eye contact helps a little. I also remember performing at my girlfriend's company Xmas party talent show and recall that a heated cognac helps too.

But my most valuable tools have come from participating in a Toastmasters group. Aside from giving prepared speeches there is a Table Topic segement where you have to give a 2 minute impromptu speech on a suprise topic. Talk about being put on the spot and then having to talk intelligently...Yup, I would recommend Toastmaster or some other orgnization or cirruculm that emphasizes public speaking. (But that Cognac sure was good!)

Hiya, Big K:

I find the shakiness thing can be minimized by a couple of things: 1) cut back on the java a few hours before the show [no, I'm not being wise -- I'm serious!]. Caffeine plus adrenaline makes for a pretty peppy combo, and while you can't completely control one, you can eliminate the other; 2) As for that adrenaline thing, you CAN have an influence on that, by forcing yourself to focus and taking some deep breaths. Tell yourself often enough that you're in control, calm, cool, and collected, and eventually, you might start buying it.

Anyway back to topic... I have this problem also I shake sooo much but if I take deep breatehs before the performance and have a sip of a glass of water every now and then I calm myself. Knowing your tricks inside and out helps immensely, and ocne oyu have a good routine set up and you know exactly what to do, just go with the flow and everything should be OK...
I'm doing my first proper perfroamnce on Saturday (taable hopping for 80 guests) so I need to amke sure I keep my 'shakyness' under control.

In my opinion, I do not think that is something that is going to go away. In my experience, sometimes it happens as I perform, after I perform, and sometimes it does'nt happen at all.

In addition to what has been said here, perhaps being a part of the moment will help also. Have fun, interact with you spectators, watch the magic happen, put the spectators in the spotlight (in a good way)to draw the heat off of yourself.

And...I am theorizing here...the focus should not always be on you, but on the moment and the people.

When your hands or whatever starts to shake, pause for a second, take a deep breath and think to yourself YOU ARE THE ONE IN CONTROLL OF YOUR AUDIENCE. You call the shots here. Just have fun.... that's what it's all about. good luck.

It might be that you just need to get used to performing, the toastmasters tip was a great idea, getting used to being front and center on short notice is good practice. also, try doing some tricks for people you know, then doing them for mixed crouds, and finally graduating to total strangers might help, somtimes its kinda scary to just jump in a group of strangers and start doing tricks. good luck.!!!!

2. deep breath
3. shake it loosely (as if you had no control in your
hand)
4. if it feels that you're shaking again, stop for a
moment talk to you're spectators
5. have confidence

Find a friend who will be your test subject all the time. Practice the trick by yourself and rehearse it using your live dummy...I mean spectator

The more you do something that makes your nervous, the less nervous you will be.

You will ONLY be confident with practice. No amount of teeth-gritting and courage will improve your confidence...you must have the routines down solid.

The one that works for me is do concentrate on my breathing and a shot of whiskey nevaer fails to do the trick followed by a mint no point performing with whiskey on your breath.

Before EVERY show, even my restaurant gigs, I am nervous, and I have been a full time performer for 5 years. My wife says I walk around, lifting my feet higher than usual (she calls it my "duck walk") and am very quiet until the first person gets there or the first table I go to, then the nerves end and I am fine.

Just like what someone else told you, the time I am not nervous before a performance is the time I will probably REALLY SCREW UP.

OBVIOUSLY don't have to much
maybe 1 or 2 chick drinks (smirnoff ice or something). 1 an hour before performing, and one just before you perform (or if your at a casual party, while you perform)...
I'm not a mage, I'm no good, but I do know that for me a bit of alc can relax and take off any nerves or whatever...

I'm a heavy weight drinker, I can handle alot without baiting my guts up...but you might wanna watch how much you drink, even if your a big fella.

If your knew to drinking 1 drink would be maximum, say 45 mins before

if your not new to drinking but you are very fit and lots of muscle`s, believe it or not but you should only have 1 drink just like a beginner drinker

only the fat people like myself should have more :D

but yes, alcohol can get rid of a few of them little jitters

but if you perform very oftenly then I suggest not drinking the alcohol. there is no denying that its bad for you...it is for real. NEVER have more then 4 standard drinks in 1 night

Nerves.
This is natural and can be lived with and yes, it is an adreanal surge of hormones preparing you for fight or flight. The surge of hormones also cuts off the digestive system and prepares for shock.
The only way to overcome this is with exposure to events that trigger it.
Learn to love the surge of hormones and know when it happens you are about to do something life changing.

I have been in so many fist fights and I also hunt and know the feelings you describe well.
If I am looking to commit to a punch up I shake like a rabid dog until I harness the adren and go for it. that surge then carrys me through.

I also get this on a hunt as I sight the x-hairs on the prey. But in this circumstance I must control the surge as it is not required and can spoil the shot. If your killing an animal in a humane way then the last thing you want is the shakes.
It is a matter of dissassociation (I know I cant spell)and a form of meditation to reduce the effects of the surge and focus on the task at hand.

It is a matter of embrace or ignore, being if you need the surge or if you do not.
