Topic: Using Square in Addition to Accepting Cash
Message: Posted by: LeoH (Feb 10, 2018 01:54PM)
Is anyone accepting payment by "Square" or other electronic payment method? How is it working for you? I find that more people, especially younger people, are carrying less cash or impulse purchases. Your thoughts, suggestions?

Hey Leo, I've been using it for a few years now and am very happy with it.. I believe there has been newer versions than what I have but mine works great and have made many more sales that I could of missed if I didn't have it..
Just yesterday I made a few sales using it at a FleaMarket and now a days if you work some fairs it's almost as if they expect you to take plastic.. they don't even ask you if you accept cards, they just pull out their cards and expect it.

Also the square reader costs nothing and you only get charged a very small fee only when you use it and if you don't use it there are no fees.. and the money goes into your account usually the next day or two.. Not only that but it's about the size of a U.S. quarter and all you need is your phone using their app.. Anyways if you haven't got it yet, I say go for it! You have nothing to loose and mant more sales to make..

Hope this helps!

Well, there goes that old line: "I've seen 'em almost tear their underwear, getting out their wallets!"

"I take cash, credit, debit, allowance money and borrowed money"

If they do pay pay cash I include sales tax in the price, otherwise it is added on. Usually this will motivate them to pay cash if they have it. Square worked good for me, I had to use a bulky pricey machine before that came out. But unless you are doing small time shows with nickel dime products you really need to take cards. Don't worry about it slowing you down either, people will wait to pay if you did a good pitch and it will help with the next turn. My favorite thing to say after a pitch with a crowd waiting to pay is "whose next?" Next favorite thing to say is when people see the crowd and ask what it is all about "please a wait moment for the next demo". They will pay and they will wait.

FYI - I pay taxes on every single dollar... just not the 5's, 10's, 20', 50's and 100's!!!

I worked a Fleamarket this Wednesday cuz many kids are off from school for Thanksgiving week. Did a demo to mom and kids.. And after the turn kids were pulling on mom to buy them this one of a time amazing deal on magic but I knew she really didn't wanna pull out 15 bucks so she asked if I accepted credit cards... Now I could easily tell it was just an excuse to not buy.. She thought being at Fleamarket it was an easy way out but I quickly said "Sure! I'll bag it up for you" and gave the bag to the kiddos... She had no choice but to pull out her card and charge it.. LOL!

I've had this excuse pulled on me at fleamarkets many times now thinking I don't accept credit cards.. This doesn't work for me every time but it does close the sale most times or at least I get a laugh when they don't know what to say afterwards...!

I don't know if it's available in the US, but we have a brilliant option in the UK called 'iZettle'

The card reader itself is a one-off fee of approx £30 (about $40) although they almost always have discounts and promotion codes, so no one ever pays more than £20 for the handset.

It connects to your phone via bluetooth, so as long as you have mobile phone signal you can take payment, all handled through an app in your phone. It can take contactless, chip and pin and magnetic stripe cards, and is really fast... just a few seconds for contactless payments

On the basic package, there's no ongoing subscription payment, you just pay 3% on each transaction. If you start to turnover higher volumes, they have packages where you can pay a small monthly amount to get preferential rates on transaction fees... but obviously you need to do a certain amount each month to make that worthwhile.

They hold your funds in your account with them for as long as you like, to get access to those funds you just click a button to have the funds deposited to your bank account within 1-2 working days.

Definitely worth having as fewer and fewer people are carrying cash around with them these days. Also - I believe that when people spend on plastic they spend more... so your chances of getting them to take multiple decks from you go up if you have one of these.

There’s two verisons fo the square reader for the phone. One that just swipes, another that allows you to read chipped credit cards. Hothe about same size, the chip reader is a bit thicker as it has two slots: o e to swipe, and another to read a chip. The chip reader has micro USB port to recharge it, as chip reader requires power. A full charge lasts a full day.
