Topic: Wand work?!?
Message: Posted by: HeronsHorse (Feb 8, 2019 06:56AM)
Ok folks, I got myself a gorgeous wand from Derek Lever's Taurusmagic site. I plan to use it for my cups and balls - when I get around to learning it! However, I really don't know anything else that I could do with it. The odd coin vanish, Ive seen that but there must be more?
Can you tell me what effects use a wand or are enhanced by a wand, or are done with just a wand?
Oh and the wand is a lovely, quite heavy, brass tipped bakelite number with a marbling effect streaking down it. Maybe I should include a photo. I will if anyone wants to see it. It was a bargain at £10 :D
Thanks,
Paul

'FLIP STICK' --someone will know the name of the "inventor".

My dear friend Seymour Davis, had a clever visible penetration of a handkerchief. --Possibly in Tarbell.

The "Flip stick" move is named after its inventor the Dutch magician Flip Hallema.

Shoot Ogawa has an entire wand manipulation routine (including moves using Flip's Flip Stick move). It was quite popular about 10 years ago.

Wand can be used in any number of effects. Ring on/off wand (any number of routines available), the penetration Dick Island mentions above, it can be suspended, used with a bottle for the floating ring bit (ring climbs up the wand). Depending on the want it may be used in a Zombie like routine .(see Max Howard's wonderful work on this).

Produce it from a small change purse (Anderson lecture notes I think has some work on this and any number of other resources).

Plunge it into a jar of rice and lift the jar. It's an old, old trick, often done with a pencil, knife, or chopstick. I've performed it with a wand.

use it to float two glasses (Eddie Joseph bit still sold by Abbott's using ungimicked wand, glasses (tumblers) and a handkerchief.

You can set it up easily for a color change (another Flip innovation).

There are dozens of tricks and effects that can be accomplished with a wand. Not to mention all of the magic that happens because of the wand.

What do you want it to do? I'd say let your imagination run wild.

Thanks Dougini & Harry!
I knew someone would know. I met Flip back in the '70s, His Flip Stick was a great bit.

Jay Marshall took him to meet Frank Everhart who did exceptionally fine bartender magic. Frank hadn't heard of him, but, as always, he invited visiting pro's. to come behind the bar and do a bit or routine, Flip went behind the bar, and, when Frank finished a routine, he introduced Flip. (Frank had a half dozen or more wands on the shelf behind the bar. He never had to reach far for a wand!) He hadn't noticed that Flip had "loaded up" for his routine with the Flip Stick! Jay had a GREAT time, watching Frank's eye (he only had one)pop!!!

When Jay told Frank about Flip, they had a big laugh together.

"Wand" can be a concept as well as a stick. Often it is a "cause of the magic" to deflect from other suspicions.
In others it is mask to cover a sneaky move or a means of directing focus.
I have used a dagger, large and small rings and a special stone as a wand.
I also have some nice wood ones.

What si strange to me is for any magician to use a wand in one routine and not in others. That wand doe snot have to "Do" anything
beyond being a consistent 'cause of the magic." At least give it to a spectator to hold until you need it.

Yes, the are are many good effect using the wand as a prop as well.

I just suggest keeping it in play for your entire show, not just as a showcase oddity.

I have a great “libretto” for a haunted wand. I am looking for an (bizarre) effect to go along with the story.

Ring on stick has become a staple of both my walk around and my close up repertoire. Great versions by Daryl, Mike Skinner and Marc Desouza.

Ring on wand
Could use it for some sort of penetration effect, like a cigarette through quarter
Have the spectator hold it for thumb cuffs, or silk through mic stand
Put it up your nose, or in your ear

Thank you Sir! This is exactly what I'm needing. I knew nothing and now I know something. :-)
I have Tarbell. Probably should've looked there first!

So many replies...! Thanks to all.
Dougini, yep seems you are right!

Harry Murphy, wow some great ideas for me to be going on with. I'll certainly look into each of those - I do know the ring on a stick as I'm sure it is in Discoverie of Witchcraft hehe, but I'll not be trying that version :D Thank you for the suggestions.

Funsway - excellent points Sir! I am in agreement here. I will only use the wand as part of a routine which might end with the cups and balls, instead of only being brought out for that. I don't really think it should be brought out for an effect and then put away again! I suppose it could easily be used in a sponge ball routine for example..making the magic more strong in many cases. I like your thinking.

Pepka and Ringmaster - Ring on a stick! How could I forget that. Thank you for the suggestion. I will look into the different versions and try them out. Thanks.

IncantoMagic - some really great suggestions there, thank you also.
!
Tom-stamm I'm not sure I understand. What do you mean? Do you have a video of you performing this? Thanks.

I hugely appreciate all of your input. It means a lot to me so, take a bow gents.
I've got a good amount to be going on with.
Time to get back to the books. . .
