Topic: How thick can pen-through-dollar tricks work?

I wasn't sure which other forum to post this in, but as I'm ultimately new to performing magic I thought I'd start here. I'll be attending quite a few tech conferences next year, a couple of which have large kids events that I'm usually involved in. I'm starting to figure out some good tricks I can throw in my laptop bag and pockets and do impromptu as I hang out. All these conferences hand out badges that are usually plastic, 1mm thick or so - not usually card stock in a clear sleeve but a rectangular piece plastic.

Do any of the pen-through-dollar type effects work through such a material? I understand there may be some flash because the plastic badge is stiff, but that's going to be OK for kids. Really I just want to know if the gimmick will hold together through the thicker, sturdier material? Has anyone tried?

I'll probably end up ordering one anyway, I've always loved the simplicity of that trick, but thought I'd see if anyone had any thoughts on it. Thanks!

There are several pen through bill props for sale, and they are not all equal. Find a good quality one with a strong gimmick, and you'll have no problem.
