Topic: Memorised deck apps?
Message: Posted by: Daren (Sep 15, 2020 03:19AM)
Hi all, does anyone know of a good memorised deck app one that I can use to train myself to use with the Martin Joyal stack?
Message: Posted by: mlippo (Sep 15, 2020 04:59AM)
I use MemDeck Pro on Android.
It's free , no advertisements and does what I need it to do.

It comes with some pre-programmed stacks, but you can easily put in, card by card, any memorised order you wish

For iOS, Stacks Trainer by Vincent Launay has the Joyal stack built in. Also works on Apple Watch, which is handy.
I use "The Ultimate Stack Trainer" by Cube; you edit the stack manually but it takes maybe 5 minutes to set it up and then you're done.

There are quite a few apps out there but it's worth checking out both Tamariz and Aronson's advice on memorisation. Woody Aragon has some good advice on memorization in his stack book, "Memorandum". Just using an app may not work for you. I like using actual cards with the number written on the back in sharpie; you can break it up into groups and used paced repetition to drive it home.

Thanks both

I have tried to download stacks trainer but for some odd reason hasn't downloaded, does Vincent need to approve it first or something?

This app helped me learn Aronson. Highly recommended! https://apps.apple.com/us/app/the-aronson-stack-trainer/id986384475

Hi ltrblst,

Iím glad you like MemDeckPro. I decided to retire it from Play Store for two main reasons:

1. I had to keep up with every new Android Version and it was not fun.

2. I was getting some nasty emails by crazy people who left non-sensical comments. One guy gave a 1 star rating with the comment: ďWe donít need app to learn a memorized deckĒ. Why?!

I decided that I did not want to have to deal with that when I was providing a free app with no ads.

Best,
Claudio

Thank you for having put out that wonderful app.

I suggest to put it back in the store but only for a small fee, sono probably only interested magician are gonna buy and review.

I really hope you change your mind, I want to pay for it!

Thanks again Claudio

Claudio,

Count me as one of the people who was also blessed to be able to use your app. Sorry that you had to deal with rude people who find a reason to complain about anything but know that there are a lot of us out there who appreciate the hard work you put into this app and still use it.

Hope that you revisit it but understand if you donít.

Take care and Merry Christmas!!

Hello,

I used Stack Master by Crompton Studios to help me with Memorandum. I used it along with a deck of cards marked up with sharpie on the backs too. The app is great when you've got a bit of time to kill... I used it on my commute to work, but I think having an actual deck in your hands is best. The app comes with various 'games' built in to help get it into your long-term memory.

Once I had the order memorised, I took my deck and shuffled it, and went through it again, first calling out the numbers, then the cards. Then I shuffled it face-up / face-down, and called out either the card or number. I would organise it into NDO just based on the numbers, pull out the suits / court cards / aces as well... you can come up with lots of different ways to recall the cards once you've got the basics down.

Memdeck Pro is the only memdeck app I've owned. Still works great.

Stackview. But I do not know if it is available on mobiles (think not). Great program. Unbelievable website associated. Wonderful work of love by Nick Pudar.

Iíve been looking for years for a fully customizable app to drill my memorized deck. Iíve gone far enough drilling by seeing the card or seeing the stack number. I need to drill on hearing the spoken card or number. Those are my real-world working conditions.

Nothing Iíve found has all the features I want;
Works on laptop.
Text to speech audio.
Card names or numbers.
Adjustable time delay between cards.
Shuffle/randomizer.
Free would be nice.

Iíve checked out a lot of apps, but none meet my needs. I finally just used a word shuffler to mix a deck several different times then used a speech to text app to read it aloud. Because I couldn't put time delays between the cards I'd have to sit with my finger on the pause/play button but it did the job.

Any first-hand information on such an app would be appreciated!

Are you saying you want the app work on a mobile phone as well as a laptop? What mobile & computer OS?

Memdeck Pro, will run on Android & Windows and does everything (and more) on your list.
Message: Posted by: PressureFan (Feb 26, 2021 10:31PM)
Thanks Francois. I only want to run it with Windows on my laptop. I'm sure I've looked at Memdeck Pro before. I see: "Requirements: Android 4.0.3+"

Most Android apps can run on windows via software. I have installed (free) Bluestack v.4 (B4) on my laptop and I can install apps directly from Play Store and run them. Here's the link to Bluestack. There are other Windows free apps that can run Android apps on a computer, but I've found Bluestack fast and reliable.

I have everything installed and have my stack in. I'm having trouble exporting. "...select the stack you want to export by tapping the spinner." I'm not seeing the spinner. I'm sure I'm missing something.

Hi PressureFan, as the developer of this app, I'm a bit surprised that you managed to install it as I have retired it from Play Store. I'm not trying to bust you or anything, just curious. Did you get a copy of the apk from your mobile? It's OK if you did as I don't mind.

Do you know what version you have installed on your PC? If you have an old version, you might have some issue. Why do you want to export your stack? There's a Help file accessible by pressing the Help button once the app has started.

I don't believe the audio will work through BlueStacks though.

Perhaps he surfed here?

For me the link is still working...

Hi Claudio, Good to hear from you. I found the app here;
https://m.apkpure.com/memdeckpro/com.solutionsbuilder.memdeckpro
If this isn't an authorized version or website, I'll certainly delete it.
I've accessed the help section and you're right, I'm not getting the audio.
Thanks.

I did not publish my app on that site - but it does not bother me. I was just fed up with getting stupid emails from Google Store installs. I'm not getting any from there, so it's all good!

But, unless you're happy with no audio, I'd suggest you install Anki on you desktop. It's an excellent and versatile flashcard system well adapted to learning a stack. There's audio of course.

Here's below a snapshot of one of my Anki apps that I've used to learn pseudo astrological associations with cards. You'll find the artwork for the cards here. Chris Aguilar is the generous guy who created those free images that I use in my app and in Anki.

The good thing with Anki, is that if you want to export your stack to your mobile, you easily can thanks to AnkiDroid. I think it'd take you a couple of hours to key in the 52 cards (questions and answers).

Thanks so much. Unfortunately the audio is my biggest need.
Message: Posted by: Claudio (Mar 3, 2021 04:20AM)
I'm not sure if I was clear enough: Anki supports medias and audio.

Claudio, I had the app (still do on my old Android tablet) and was surprised to not find it on the play store when I got my LG (crappy phone) a while back. Anyway, It broke and my mobile insurance replaced it with a Galaxy S10 running Android 11. I was browsing thru my "purchase history"(app store / library / not on this device) in the app store and was able to download it back to this phone. The version that downloaded is 2.20

For me it was Memo Deck on iOS. I truly recommend it.

Thank you for letting me know, Jeff. I did not know it was possible to do that, but after reflection it does not surprise me. I did not remove the app from Google Play, I just made sure that it could not get new installs (but reinstalling is fine). Version 2.2 is the latest and is quite good, compared to its previous iterations.

Does it run OK on Android 11?

I'm actually reworking the app so that it may run on desktops (Windows & Mac), and on iOS & Android and more. I'm also adding stats and extra functionality. Fingers crossed. It won't be available over Google Play, but will be downloadable directly from the Web.

I still have version 2.20 on my phone too.
But don't ask me which version of Android I have :-)
I have an Xperia 2 (Sony).
Message: Posted by: Poof-Daddy (Mar 7, 2021 05:34PM)
Works fine so far. My android phone is my "backup" (the LG was still under contract but my wife and I hated them so much we upgraded early but still have to keep them until contract ends) her a Samsung 21 fe (or something like that) and me an iPhone 11. I do like the Galaxy S10 they replaced my LG with and will continue using the apps on it after the contract ends.

I mostly use your app on my Galaxy 10.1 2014 version tablet. I only use the tablet for your app and a bunch of magic PDFs I keep on it.
