Topic: My Lockdown Projects - Die Box Effect
Message: Posted by: magic259 (Sep 27, 2021 06:57AM)
To keep my mind active during the various pandemic lockdowns and to stay out of my wife’s hair, I decided to dig out a few old hand tools and have a go at making some magic props......in reality, these were challenges that I set myself. I have a certain level of “skill at hand” when it comes to arts and crafts type projects, although I am bit rusty on all fronts.

Anyway, I have ended (thus far) making something in the region of about 40 effects, some of which are variations on the same theme with different designs.

The one I would like to share with you folks at this time is my version of the classic Die Box effect (includes a hand crafted storage chest). Not another die / die box effect I hear you say...well, this one is slightly different in that the die is totally ungimmicked!

Synopsis of the effect - while my back is turned (or when I am out of the room) the spectator places the 25mm die in the small ring box, remembers the top face number, and closes the lid. When I turn round (or return) I am able to divine the die top number without going anywhere near the ring box....in fact, the ring box (with the die inside) could be placed back in the storage chest / hidden from view!

Note: everything can be fully examined before, during and after the effect, and as already mentioned, the die is totally ungimmicked and can be given to the spectator as a souvenir!

BTW, like with all my effects, I like to build a routine around the divination of the die number rather than just announcing what it is. In this case it could be done using a pendulum and six cards with a different die face image on each or by using the Hand of Cleopatra or something similar along with the die cards.

Photos of the props can be seen using the following link - https://imgur.com/a/eb4wmi8 The card box in the first photo is there just to add some scale and not part of the effect.

Lastly, I would like to mention the late Peter Jefferies (the electronic wizard) who gave me the inspiration to help make this effect come to fruition.

Looks fantastic. I'd never heard of a Hand of Cleopatra but looked it up... I assume there's no place to find those anymore, huh?

And I'd love to see what else you've been cooking up!

Really wonderful work magic259! So elegant looking.

The prop is great as is, but I wonder what the die would have looked like with Egyptian symbols instead?

Lin, Satire and Wizard, many thanks for your kind words....very much appreciated.

A die with Egyptian symbols is an interesting thought, but possibly difficult to find. You see, I wanted something that was totally ungimmicked, cheap, bought off the shelf and could therefore be handed out as a souvenir at the end of the performance. A standard 25mm die fitted that role perfectly!

The Egyptian themed decoration on the chest is not relevant to the effect, I just thought by adding some additional decoration it would make the chest look more interesting. Also, using the Hand of Cleopatra to perform the revelation is just an idea, but not necessary....a simple revelation would do!

BTW, I have also made a less decorative chest that I can use to hold / store the ring box, which in hindsight is probably more complimentary to the effect. Please see updated photo set using the following link - https://imgur.com/a/9Ewsllu

Love that the die is not gimmicked and could be given to the spectator to keep… could the box be scaled up in size (and would the effect still work) with a toy alphabet block instead of a die?
