Within reason, as part of a close-up magic show. I'm assuming you mean traditional close-up (sitting at a table).

An entire act of escapes for close-up, however, would get monotonous, since it would likely center on hand-binding restraints.

As a departure from cards, coins, and the usual effects for close-up, it would not hurt to introduce an escape from a set of thumbcuffs or a light Siberian chain, etc. at the close-up table. I would, though, simply add these as part of a more traditional close-up magic routine.

"Get the maitre d', honey; that magician has chained himself to our table again..."

I could see a nice little thumbcuff routine fitting in nicely with some close up effects. But I'd leave the water torture cell at home.

Siberian Chain Escape would play very nicely close-up. I can also imagine a thumb tie being entertaining. However, I'm not too sure how a realistic "struggling" escape would work. I think it would make people uncomfortable.

Its an interesting idea to think about...

Are there many magicians today practicing Houdini-style "big" escapes?

Chimp,

Yes, a great many...but not for close-up :).

I personaly have done the 100 Ft. Rope escape as an ending to a close up show. Went over pretty good. Especially since I let a couple of hecklers from earlier on tie me up.

Thumbcuffs
Thumbtie
Handcuffs (or wristcuffs)

These would all work as part of a close-up act. I suppose you could also include some sort of mail bag escape, but I think that's heading towards parlour-type tricks. Not something you'd do as a stroll-around - or maybe there's a gap in the market!

So, it can and has been done...

So as Nike would put it...

"Just do it!"
