I would like to create a name for myself. Does anyone have any suggestions? How the name should sound like? Any references?
Message: Posted by: Priest (Sep 9, 2002 08:14PM)
My only suggestion is to be unique and keep it to your own personality.

Don't expect someone else to create it for you. I don't know you, or know your personality.

Just be creative, and original.

Dan,
You've got way too much free time!
Of course, I must have, too, because I read every name! :rotf:

Dan Farmer writes: ". . . unless your name was like...Melvin Shmediecamp you could probably just use your real name. "

Of course, if your name IS Melvin Shmediecamp, you might want to change it to something more suitable for the stage.

Like Herman Shmediecamp.

Actually, J.B. Bobo (no first names, just initials) is J.B. Bobo's real name.
Jean Beauxbeaux was his great-grandfather, who changed his name to "Bobo" when he immigrated to North America.

I am thinking of calling myself Dwayne Grey as a magician name. What does this name suggest to you? What do you think about it?
Message: Posted by: Victor Brisbin (Sep 13, 2002 12:57AM)
It reminds me a little of "Dorian Grey," the story of the man who didn't age, but his portrait did. Are you working on a performing name, or a pen name? Do you resemble a "Dwayne Grey," or is this a character - a mysterious personage? Just curious.

By the way, Roy's last name (of S&R) is Horn. Jonathan Pendragon's first name is "Claude." Ted Annemann was born Theodore John Squires, but his father deserted the family, and his mother married Stanley Anneman. Ted added an extra "n". I'm not certain when or if Ricky Jay used the pseudonym "Tricky Ricky." It may have been when he appeared as the youngest magician to perform on television. His given name has been reported as "Richard Potash."

Lim: Personally I think Lim Han Chung is a great name for an entertainer. It's unique in the world of magic (as far as I know), it's relatively short, and it's easy to pronounce, even for us Westerners.

Lim Han Chung is a terrific name for a performer.
More importantly, it's one that can and will be remembered!

Obviously, my name, Karim Dhanji, is definitely not a good stage name. Anyway, I don't think I would be able to remember Lim Han Chung, but I guess you can incorporate that into your routine somewhere, be creative.

Can you believe that Englebert Humperdink's real name is Arnold George Dorsey? - THAT was a brain storming session I would have loved to sit in on.

I'm with the people saying to use your real name. I have a friend from Vietnam whose name is Bao (pronounced 'Bow') and now he goes by 'Bob.' Yea - it sounds American, but c'mon. Bob?

I think your name sounds Magical now as it is. Look at my stupid name! How many David's are there already in Magic?

You are unique. Blessings,

PS - I agree... avoid the "...ini" names. Slydini and Houdini's names may have been great at the time (no comment on their magic, just names here), but the names are now, well, stereotypical and as modern stage names are a bit cheesy. (Sorry, guys.) :vgoofy:

Maybe Malaysia is not exotic and magical to you, for you live there. But to me, living in San Francisco, I think half of your work done for you, for "Malaysia" ignites thoughts of magic and exotic island mysteries.

I do believe that Paul Zenon's real name is Paul Hill.
Can anyone confirm??
Message: Posted by: Harry Murphy (Dec 4, 2002 09:36AM)
What a lot of good ideas here!

ColinB, why would you have to be Scandinavian to call yourself Sven Gali? Remember that Chung Ling Soo as the alter ego of William Robinson (as posted above). Robinson by no stretch of the imagination was oriental. Doesn’t Galli mean magic in one of the Indian dialects? Galli, Galli = Magic, Magic? Maybe it could be a Hindu magicians name. Hummmm.

Names? I recommend that you stick as close to your own as possible. I chose Harry Murphy because it was the closest to Honre’ Mumblepeas that I could find!

Collin, were did you find the reference that St. Ripper was the Patron Saint of card magicians? What religion is he/she a Saint in? The Roman Catholic list of Saints does not include a St. Ripper but does include a 10th century Bishop that became St. Ripert. Unfortunately he is not the Patron Saint of anything magical.

In fact I could not find any Saints associated with card playing or card magic. The closest I could come to a Saint for magicians was for actors (St Genesius and St. Vitus), or for Beggars (er…street magicians? St. Alexius and St. Guiles). There were saints listed for carnies and jugglers (St. Julian the Hospitaler) and even two for clowns (St. Justin Marter and St Genesius again). Oh yes, St. Vitus is the patron saint of dancers also and St. Bernerdin of Siena is the patron saint of gamblers. Still I could find no patrons for magicians, illusionists, or cardicians.
Message: Posted by: ColinB (Dec 4, 2002 09:50AM)
St Ripper is simply a play on words along the lines of Sven Gali... I was thinking in terms of the two most popular gaffed card decks... Svengali and Stripper...?

Message: Posted by: ColinB (Dec 4, 2002 10:04AM)
No way! You posted some interesting information, all the same. Maybe we should suggest that one of those saints become the patron saint of magicians...
Message: Posted by: ruiefe (Dec 4, 2002 08:31PM)
I don't know if this is only in Europe but you have a patron saint of magicians: Saint Giovani Bosco, an Italian Saint that used magic to serve his work as a priest.
The day chosen to celebrate is the 31, January because it is the date of his death.
I think I can make a more exhaustive research if you want me to.
St Ripper was, in fact, S3per - before being a saint (how is that for a joke? :bawl:)
Colin, I think Sven Gali is perfect. I toy with words all the time and that one didn't occur to me. Very interesting.
I like the lists of names. Great encyclopedias we have in here!!!
To the original poster - I think your name is perfect for a stage name. Really. I wouldn't change it. (Of course, I'm saying this so you don't use Sven Gali and I can pick it up for me.) :D

Somebody listed Uncle harry's real name as Henri Bouton, he was actually born Henry Boughton. Both sides of the family later changed the spelling to Bouton for reasons unknown. My great grandfather, Harry's uncle, apparently changed it first and spelled all his kids names. People often did that way back when to avoid bankruptcy, but as I recall uncle harry was originally Harry Boughton, then with uncle pete was the Defranchsco brothers, then Harry Bouton, then Fredrick the Great, then finally Blackstone.
I two have undergone many a change in stage name, usually to hide from angry audiences, sometime I've had to change my stage name between tricks :) It needs to fit your personna and style, as well as be something easy to remember, I have used my real name, and I have used Omyn, which was my maternal grandfather's middle name. If you do a chinese magician act, ur own name is fine.
Message: Posted by: Bill Thompson (Dec 12, 2006 09:33AM)
I think that a stage name is fine but it doesn't necessarily have to be The Amazing ________ or ____________ the Magnificent. I once toyed with the idea of adding an ini or oni to my last name but then I found out that Johnny Thompson already was known as The Great Tomsoni... so that was out... How about dropping my last name and using my middle name... Bill Alexander... is there a magician with that name?

After umpteen tries (and fails), I said, "the heck with it..." and entered "Dougini"...

Just remember that the suffix "-ini" literally means "like, or resembles".

For example, "Houdini" means "like (Robert) Houdin", who was Houdini's idol.

So "Dougini" up there means "like Doug", which he is, because he IS Doug!

Now my brain hurts...

Hi there,

I like your name already! Han Chung Lim sounds good, and rolls off the tongue! Sounds a bit like Sim Sala Bim, but maybe that's just me!

Hope this helps!

Many thanks
