I went back and did a search on the magiccafe on newguy’s old posts to re-read and give context to the posts we now know Michael Weber posted under a pseudonym to defend all the delays, poor customer service, false promises etc. Real Secrets did at the time and the more I read them
the more I realized how despicable, manipulative, self-serving and devilish this guy is. I was a huge fan and believe I have 90% of everything MW released/published including all his lecture notes, wallet, real secret releases etc. I am making the decision to sell ALL my MW stuff and will NEVER buy any MW releases, even if he were to come up with the best magic trick or book in history. And yes, am calling for a boycott of Michael Weber given how appalling his behavior has been with/to the community! Unless he apologizes and comes forward to explain why he did what he did! Which he owes us if he cared for this community. BM |

Weber shouldn’t troll the Café and Petty released a trick from 2012 that was in real secrets. I didn’t like the trick then or now. Not looking to carry more receipts. There are much larger issues here folks that have been building for years. Murphys is the machine that keeps it going.
The irony of trying to read this thread with an annoying pop-up window from Murphys advertising this trick. |

Sure, you hope people do right by you, but until that time (whatever and whenever that is), I choose to extend grace which is simply unmerited favor. But I completely take your point and know what you're saying. |

As many of us suspected, there's always more to the story. Always. Whether that changes things for people or not is up to the person. As we all bring our own bias and life experience (including who are friends are, our 'magic' social circle, etc) to the table, it's hard to be objective. But when taking a look at the article, it's a good vantage point to get a better grasp. Personally, I think it proves my point that no one is above reproach. No one is a saint. And definitely not in this situation. But once again, we can't know another person's heart, so we judge on what we do see. I see a hot mess. That's why forgiveness is important, even more so when those we forgive acknowledge their part. Without openness and honesty, mental wounds fester. Or maybe I've watched too much Sally Jessie Raphael. But the truth is, we don't need "sides". We need a willingness to be open. I've actually changed my opinion about this release since it first came to our attention. And there are multiple people I respect that have made me pause to consider new information. It's because I trust and respect those people (two of which are on opposite sides of the debate) that I have thoughtfully considered their perspective and arguments. In the end, it ain't my business right now, especially in the court of public opinion. So why am I weighing in? Because I'm avoiding work and this is more interesting, especially after reading that article. I know one thing though, I'm scrapping a trick I had where an ace turns over in a packet one at a time. I got a feeling something has been done like that before. If not, you heard it here first, so it's official. It'll be called, "Twisting These Aces" |

A Real Secret
You guys are right. Michael Weber is Newguy. But, so was I. And so were a handful of other magicians whose names many of you would likely recognize (some no longer with us.) The original idea was to allow a few of us to participate in this community anonymously, primarily so the MagicCafe wouldn’t show up in web searches of our names by clients or muggles. We soon realized it had the nice side effect of allowing us to share ideas, information and opinions absent the air of authority (or lack of in my case) that sometimes happens when a recognizable name posts here. We thought that if we appeared to be a “new guy” in magic, we might side step a lot of the petty arguments and flame throwing that happen in all public magic forums, and that people would consider the ideas and opinions without being tainted by the reputation of the source—like Stephen King writing as Richard Bachman. I never knew which posts came from who, but I can tell you that I never posted as Newguy after the first time Michael Weber was unmasked here as “Newguy” way back in 2008. In fact, I rarely look at the Café except to research specific topics, and I had all but forgotten about Newguy until a friend pointed me to this thread. I hope you’ll believe me when I tell you there was no nefarious plan to deceive or con anyone, and no malice intended. Surely it's no surprise that many magicians have shadow accounts here and a desire for anonymity, so we didn't think it was any big deal. Perhaps we were naive. We are telling you this because the Newguy account is useless now, and we don’t like seeing our friend getting beaten up by a half wise mob. My understanding is that the responses to Mr. Petty here were not made by Michael personally, but with his blessing and on his behalf, and only after Mr. Petty refused to communicate with Michael and Tim Trono about their trick Age Receipts--choosing instead to have Murphy’s Magic act as intermediary, and taking the situation public on YouTube rather than have what should have been a civil and private conversation. I have more to say about that situation, but Michael has politely requested that I stand down. Newguy is dead. Long live "Newguy." Your friend in magic, Eric Mead PS--Yes, I know what you really care about: It is our sincere belief and intention that the Conover books will go to print before the end of this year. |

Eric Mead. 4 posts.
It’s fantastic that every post that Webber and “friends” made under the newguy account were all written in identical linguistic fashion, always has the same spelling mistake and all smothered in mirror image arrogance. That’s the REAL genius behind Newguys account. But yeah, ok. You haven’t been lying to everyone for TWENTY years and you’re not going to start now ![]() Joking aside, why would Weber tell Sudo that newguy was him? That would be very silly and potentially harmful if the account was being used by multiple people. A man as smart as Weber would have said “Hey, I use this account with some friends but if you want to speak to me solely then here’s an alternative contact.” But he didn’t do that. And I am not Sparticas. I… am Eric Mead Corleone. The sad part is… there’s still no apology from Weber. |

On Feb 10, 2023, Eric Mead wrote: So who exactly posted this? - “ The inverse binary approach was built into the Age Receipts printed, published and sold by Real Secrets in 2012. The credit at the time went to Max Maven who had published it under the name Phil Goldstein in The Violet Book of Mentalism in 1980. In his effect "Racer's Edge" he uses cards with the names of horses on them to represent the names of the equine competitors in several races. While simply crediting "Age Cards" and writing that the principle is "*Often referred to as the "Magic Age Cards," a binary sorting method that dates back hundreds of years." He also employs the marking in the opposite way to the classic method, so that the participant KEEPS the cards with his/her item listed and discards the other. It is from the discards that the performer secretly learns the necessary information to determine the selection. Max was the credited as the source of inspiration for the use of the "reverse binary" arrangement. To date, we are unaware of an earlier published explanation of it in a magic text, but we do have two sets of age cards that were used as advertising give-aways, both of which use the reverse arrangement and both of which use lists of things rather than simply digits. One of them dates to 1950, the other seems to be from around 1946. (special thanks to SC for allowing us to see actual examples of these earlier cards.) When we shared the existence of the earlier applications of reverse binary with Max, he was excited, not disappointed, to learn that he had rediscovered something so wonderful and overlooked. It should be mentioned that the credited use of Max's published approach (of the reverse procedure) was also utilized by Tom Stone in his electronic publication Gravel, published in 2003. In those notes, his excellent effect, The Test, uses reverse binary with symbols and secret markings on the backs of the cards. Later, purchasers of 2017 release of The Works found two different sets of Age Receipts in the box (one set printed on Tyvek) again, operating on the reverse binary construction, and offered a new technique to utilizing a natural aspect of the blank backed receipts to be able to secretly identify them from across the room. The version titled StorAge is still one of our favorites and is always in the glove compartment of our car. And, a unique and non-mathematical approach combining binary sorting and a kind of progressive description was used with a single receipt in the effect, The Action of Receiving, published in The Journal of Psience, Volume 1, Number 5 in 2017. Performers interested in different ways to approach the presentation of the effect are invited to look at the primary routine in the issue as well as the bonus item, Hunt and Gather, which uses the same non-mathematical binary receipts in addition to writing on the back of a receipt and a p**k wallet to increase the beats and expand the themes of the demonstration. For those interested in exploring how powerful the secret application of simple binary principles can be, you are encouraged to read all of Leo Boudreau's published work, in addition to the dozens of other binary-based mysteries Max published under the names Maven and Goldstein. Though the original Color Series booklets are hard to come by, the material has been collected in the hardcover book PRISM, which is must-reading for magicians and mentalists. Excited to learn more about the recent revelation about Scott Dressburgh. Have, as of yet, been unable to find him mentioned in any publications, ring reports (an important place to look for references to what magicians were performing for each other throughout the decades) or letters. Will be sure to put his name at the front of the list after it gets posted to the Conjuring Archive. “ How many people were linked to that account and posted under that name? We obviously can’t prove that what you’re claiming is true, we will have to take your word for it. I’d say it’s convenient but it’s not. It’s either a plan to spread the hate expressed here over “Michael’s” behaviour and dampen the blow by allowing several “names” to come forward and each take a portion of the heat or what you’re saying is true, and you’ve all behaved disgustingly, patting each other’s backs and shilling each other to allow all your profiles to grow and benefit from that account. It doesn’t make the situation better, in my opinion it makes it much worse. The reason it’s worse is it’s a purposeful plan by a council of people who each sat behind the scenes laughing at the suckers who purchased their products. Who started the account? How many people are posting now and how many other accounts are your group behind? I think it’s offensive that Michael has not come forward and simply apologised - instead, he “gave his blessing” for others to post on his behalf. He has you come here to face the music - why couldn’t he tell us what you have come forward and said? The truth is, everyone would have moved on next week and had other things to talk about. I think for a lot of people they will believe that this is another cheap effort to wriggle out of a tight spot. David. |
