Thanks, Michael and Daniel!
Michael, remember my first message, I haven't actually painted silks. I just dye fiber and paint a bunch of other stuff. Keeping that in mind, I might try one of two methods. You can use a thickener in your dye like sodium alginate. It's basically powdered kelp and is used to thicken a lot of foods. I know the dye supply houses carry it but I'm not sure where else to get it. Then after letting it sit to thicken for a few hours, you could just paint it on the silk. That reduce the tendency to run but you might need to experiment a little. One recipe I have for painting silk fabric uses 1/4 teaspoon sodium alginate to 1 cup of dye solution. Water soluble resists could also be used to keep the dye from running. With that you just paint the resist on the areas you don't want to dye. In both cases you would need to wash out the extra stuff after the dye has been heat set. Painting red over yellow is doable but you might have to experiment to get a good red and to make sure your colors don't muddy. It can even make a difference if you paint it while it's damp and or while it's dry. Think prototypes. Sydney |

I will surely give it a go after I finish with my current messes. Thanks, Sydney! Never can have enough prototypes, I always say.

Wow! Syd,
Do you know how little dye it takes to ruin a whole carpet? LOL! I was the guy who proved Murphy's Law. Before it was just a suggestion! My project got delayed, but I'm glad it did. You've given me some important information I didn't have. (Lucy is here to explain the long words to me. Don't tell Rick.) You gave us some important stuff to know! Thanks. I do have my scale drawing of a pattern of sorts. I experimented today with how much polyurethane it takes to waterproof poster board. It's hopeless! It will absorb all you can buy. It gets darker but not stronger. I may be better off cutting things out of the side of a plastic milk jug and painting it. There is paint now for plastic lawn funiture. Michael, are you trying to do a silk divided diagonally to be 1/2 red and 1/2 yellow? Would it be OK to sew it together? In China, I think that would cost about $.50 for the work. Of course the silk is extra. The problem with cutting silk diagonally is that the seam has to be the type around diamond silks or it will ravel like crazy. If there is a market for 300 of them, I'll consider importing them. Bob |

Not for the market... I'd just like to make a half dyed silk for performing a variation of McComb's routine. I'd rather have a single silk dyed, not two sewn together halves. The one I had with the marketed set got ruined, but it was crap anyway. I do the dye tube color change, but wanted to extend the routine.

Doesn't look like it, 7 hours, 10 minutes from my doorstep to it, and I wont be performing LOL.
If you come up this way on the way to Memphis, we can meet for lunch, but I bet you go I-20 over and up. |

Ricker,
We will go the Columbus, MS route. That gives Lucy one more chance to check her clinic on the way out. Bill has invited a wild crew, so we should have some fun. Ed Hutchison (Fortune Foretold) will be there. We have a ten-hour drive, so I hope lunch is in Memphis. (We have a party to attend Thursday night.) We will have to pedal fast! At least we are not taking a unicorn. I am taking doves. We'll have to get together another time. But we must! Take care. Bob and Lucy Magic By Sander |

Project for the wood working geniuses here: Colaboration afoot!
Look at my exhibit pages both on my sig and at cryptoillusions.us Assume there exists a 'wonder' that is on a base of say 11" x 6" (or any size really except too large. This 'wonder' is inside a windowed 'Box'. The window faces to the front. The window is covered SOMEHOW (maybe a small curtain)...by depositing a Quarter, the window is cleared and the 'wonder' is visible for about 15 seconds...OR? Run with it. Maybe even a light comes on (so the glass can be a two way mirror?) Doug

Doug,
Put in dancing girls! Remember Kansas City? Get some of those little bitty women there. OR going another route, sell HOPE! (It appears just now and then.) Take care. Bob |

Hello, my name is Massimo (actually my mentalist name) for the Café. Michael Baker invited to participate. In case you are interested here's a partial bio: I am 57, retired from the Federal Gov't. I was a Federal agent for 23.5 years. I been in magic 50+ years. I teach, perform, write, invent and try to build. I learned building from my father, he was an Industrial Arts Professor for 45 years. I started out at 12 years of age building new schools and fixing old in the summer. My dad was the construction supervisor for the district during the summer. When he was alive we also built illusions for young budding illusionists who could not afford the higher priced props. I used to build, fix, and recondition props for a local magic here in Phoenix "Sun Magic". The owner, Jack Sutherland, was a great friend of mine. I had the pleasure of fixing and reconditioning some of Harry Blackstone Jr.s props.
That is all for now. Am I on the right site? |

Massimo,
You are very close! We started here on the Café, and still occassionally post here, but we found the need to form our own online forum. We are not associated with The Magic Café, except by virtue of the fact that we all met on the Café! Find us here. Sign in and join in. ~michael

Massimo,
Welcome to crew. This is sort of a support group for people who just keep tinkering with magic and building props. You'll love our 12 Step Program. That is to eat somewhere together every month! All the other folks have skills. I need the therapy! Bob Magic By Sander |

I just posted this in the workshop, but felt it should also be included here, as this is where many people have come for this info:
To all magic builders: If you are interested in magic building, have some tips to share, or want to improve your knowledge and skills in those areas, check the message board at PMZZ. We are a new forum dedicated strictly to magic building, predominately woodworking, although other areas are definitely not discouraged. We feel they all lead to the same end... the conception, design, prototyping, and building of quality magic apparatus. In addition, there are discussions on general workshop organization and efficiency. We also have some good chit-chat, and fun! Our membership is growing daily (I barely have time to keep up with all the posts now!), and some of magic's most respected builders are on board. So, if this is something of interest to you, give us a look! ~michael baker
