Michael Moshen is generally accredited with the formation of dynamic manipulation. He is a juggler, and dancer. I reccomend his film In Motion with Michael Moshen.

I've been doing contact juggling on and off for about 5 years. I've used it a time or two in my children's shows and have spent a lot of time trying to figure out ways to strongly incorporate it into the rest of my act. I have yet to find a great use for it, but here are a few things I have done:
-Bring out a bottle of bubbles. After blowing a few, blow a particularly large one (to hopefully match the size of your acrylic ball.) The children will watch the bubbles and not your hand so you can easily grab your ball and pretend to catch the bubble. From there you can go into a CJ routine. I really like this routine, but I hate dealing with bubbles because the solution can easily spill, and it always seems to drip from the "wand" and get all over hands and other things. I also get paranoid packing the bottle with all my other props. -Another thing I've done is go from a CJ routine into a comedy crystal ball/fortune telling bit. Since this is usually for kids birthdays, I misread their age: "I see someone is turning 47 today!" as well as other obvious attributes. I am certainly interested in other ideas or routines people may have used. Especially leading into or out of a CJ routine. I usually just stop, put it away and move on to the next item. I'd love to find or come up with some type of kicker or link to another routine. |

Though Ive been into magic my whole life and cj for only about two years the magical appearence of cj is what made me want to get into it. Its kind of funny all this histoy has been posted I live in West Virginia were it seems like almost everyone is of "Christian" faith. Often times Ive encontered preachers and deacons that have gotten upset when Ive bought magic into the church buildings but not one has ever called me out for juggling of any type. Persoanaly I think there is real magic and its called jugging that's why it intrigs me so much.
I combine cards and cj by cjulling and simply looking into the ball mysteriously to reveal their card. This I an interestng topic I would love to hear more thoughts on presenting cj as majik and the history of magicians calling themselves jugglers to potect themselves as Al mentioned above. |

I have been thinking a lot about this subject as of late.
Here is a practice session of mine. Sorry about the poor quality and pixilation. You Tube mangled it a bit. Contact Juggling is a dirty...dirty word http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=mA1AbaJ5cWA |

I'm now completly catch with kinetic magic...
just received 4x80 mm clear balls... I would suggest everyone involved in CJ check "in isolation": it presents the cleanest, most fluid and innovative contact sequences I've ever see! the promo clip Here you'll find the link to Fullmoon performers where to get the dvd. Thanks to those beautiful acts performed by skillful artists! |

I admit, Contact Juggling has always seemed a lousy name for it, though it certainly is descriptive. When I started 12 or 13 years ago, I called it Kinetic Juggling. Perhaps not as descriptive, but I like the sound of it. Dynamic Manipulation is cool too. On our promo packages, we also call it Krystal Manipulation. Another juggler calls it Sphere Play.
Oddly, naming it largely fell on those of us that started early, because its esteemed creator, Michael Moshen, really doesn't like anyone else doing it. Ironic, because he has managed to start a whole new branch of juggling/manipulation. There is, in my opinion, nothing more beautiful. Jeb

Hello all!
Quote:
On our promo packages, we also call it Krystal Manipulation. I like this: Kristal manipulation... What I don't like is the word "juggling"...I do some toss juggling, but my feeling is that KM belongs to a completely different branch of "object manipulation"... We should all try to definite a final appellation, as this art deserves it, imo. Hey, Jeb, I look at the video section on your site...I love it!! Well done man, you and your wife do a very original act...KInetic Shivaaaa!!! I only have a suggestion: I feel the kristals in your act are quite static...not a lot of palmspinning or rolling...but I understand that one of you must work blindly, which I think is very difficult... However, I found very powerful your 4-arms idea! Quote:
its esteemed creator, Michael Moshen, really doesn't like anyone else doing it. This is something I don't really understand...MM (re)discovered a whole new range of ball manipulation...OK. But this isn't a marketed trick! Imagine someone moving one club in a new way...from the point where you witness the stunt for the first time, why in the world couldn't you try it your way??? For me MM developed something like a huge ego reaction... But the reallity is that thousands of people have fun and play and work with these pretty spheres all around the world!! And they all thanks MM for his genius! Cheers, |

Lawrens,
I do agree. I was very surprised at MMs reaction as well. We all look up to him as having given us a wonderful gift, and he tells us not to use it. It is quite unfortunate. What you say about the static balls in our act does have merit. A lot of it comes from how limited ther person in back is (namely me). There are all sorts of odd problems you would never think of when your have to go around someone else in order to move. We are restructuring somewhat so that the person in front (my wife) will do more of the rolling. I only wish they had had the lights on correctly on the show. The balls should have been glowing blue. I need to put up another video of the way it's supposed to look. Jeb
