Hi David i am just starting out in magic and my hero is David Copperfield. I love his illusions and his close up magic is fabulous. But what I want to know is who was your magic hero and what got you interested in this wonderful art.

James -
I don't know if I have a magic hero, so to speak. I came to magic as a pre-teen, performing tricks from books taken from the library or loaned by neighbors. I had a friend back then whose dad showered him with magic props from Tannens - this was a new world to me. The joke shops in Boston had some good magic supplies - I'd take the subways downtown every weekend. In college, I did little magic (I was busy with so many other things) but when I moved to New York, I found it again, and started studying. I got a job managing The Magic Towne House, and there I saw some wonderful close-up talents, guys who performed lovely, flawless close up magic. They awed me, and were a real inspiration. They still are. Whenever I see someone do something well, I'm motivated to improve myself, and as there will always be others who do things better than I, it is a pleasant cycle. |
