I wish I start magic early like you. Admire you. I'm very new to this field, just 2 months. Some thoughts:
1)be nice, be an attractive person: if they like you, they 'll be very likely like your magic. 2)only perform what you are really good at: NEVER perform those tricks which you can't really master, even though you think those tricks look really good in restaurant setting. Have to against this temptation. I've painful experience on that, not listen to this rule.... 3)relax, relax, relax My 2 cents. Keep us posting.
A novice't reflection: I like watching my audience's jaws drop, but sadly in reality I'm just too busy to enjoy it.

So just do bizarre or geek magic like needle thru arm , arm chopper ,razor blade swallowing or a strait jacket escape . You will be a big hit on the restaurant circuit. /sarcasm off. Give me a break .. just because other restaurant workers do it does not mean you can't .. I agree you should come up with your OWN presentation for some of the classics and also try some new effects too . But don't dis the classics just because they have been done already. A lot of times you will get people who have NEVER seen the classics and will be amazed just like you where the first time you saw them.
Have a Magical Day!
