Hello
Wondering if anyone could give me any information on this trick? I've read what there is on this forum about it, which isn't much. How good is it really? |

Here's a review I did in another forum a long time ago:
Royal Oil by Dan Harlan Effect: This is basically a 3 phase "Oil and Water" effect. In each phase 5 red cards and 5 black cards are mixed together fairly, and instantly separates back to their respective color set without any effort from the performer. The effect is pretty amazing considering the spectator clearly sees the two colors being mixed together, yet as soon as the performer squares up the card, they become separated again. Especially the 3rd phase when the separation is INSTANT. And I mean INSTANT. Difficulty: Not hard to do at all. No sleight of hand required. The patter provided with instructions are a bit long, but I've adapted it and created my own patter. The instructions are very clear and detailed with illustrations. Set-up: A little set up is required if you want to start out with a deck of cards and take the packet out from a deck. You will not be able to use a borrowed deck in that case. Or I just use the packet without bothering to set it up in a deck. Depends on your routine I guess. Examinable? No. Unless you are able to switch your packet or lose your packet in a deck of cards and switch the deck of cards. But then gimmicked packet tricks are usually not examinable. Overall I give Royal Oil a rating of 8/10. A great trick for beginners. |

Overall I would second the above - with two extra points
You need a table and fair ammount of room to work this. The patter with the trick is awful. Truely stupid. But oil and water patter is easy to work out. The third phase looks totaly impossible, by the way. |

I really enjoy this effect. There are multiple times in which the colors are mixed and then seperated. The changes are very visual as the spectator just saw the cards clearly mixed.
I really like the patter with this effect. It deals with cards being used to do military maneuvers and combat. I enjoy history as well as studying military combat. I think the patter is clever and points out how cards may have been used differently in past times. If you don't like the patter, create your own. The effect is first rate. |

You need a table and fair ammount of room to work this. First of all, I just want to mention that I supplied a script with Royal Oil, not patter. You are correct that "patter" is easy to work out. Something like, "Look black cards and red cards. I'm going to mix them, alternating the colors. First black, then red, then black, and so on. But with just a magical shake, they separate. All the black in one pile, all the red in another. That makes me just about the coolest person in the world. Don't you agree?" A script, however, requires conscious effort to keep the narrative consistent and compliment the actions while carefully choosing the subject matter (and each phrase) to provoke the desired emotional response. Admittedly, the theme that I chose is unique and may not suit everyone's taste. Hey, Rene Lavand barely speaks for his beautiful presentation. When you choose to speak, your words will influence your audience. I prefer to have an intentional influence. Regarding needing a table -- The third phase has the largest layout, but I have performed the entire routine in people's hands in cocktail situations. The impact is tremendous. The first two phases can be done without a surface at all. You may also feel free to work out variations. I know I have! I'm happy a few of you are getting good use out of this effect. It was one of my pet secrets. --Harlan |

Dan, I just won your Royal Oil at our local IBM Ring auction.
It seems just perfect. I will take your advice and work out some personal variations. |
