At least the lock smith thought he had a working key. He had (I guess) no reason to suspect the key would fail. This is a silly error, but only the fact that he was a lock smith makes it funny. A lay person trying on a pair of cuffs with a key he believes will work in his hand seems normal enough to me given the fascination created about handcuffs by our media. When this lay person finds he is stuck, this is sad and not funny. My point is that the level of intellegence demonstrated here is lacking. Someone finds an old pair of handcuffs amoung some old junk, and assumes there is a key somewhere deserves the trouble he gets. Worse, consider having to hold VERY still as a drill is applied to keyholes a centimeter away from your precious flesh and blood. One slip on the part of the driller or the fool is a disaster.
This is why I wonder if there is more to the story...Like maybe little brother finds them, shows them to big brother who wrestles them onto little borther as a prank, thinking little borther has the key.

When I dropped the Cuffs off. I dropped off the key that came with it. I guess they were curious about the cuffs. about 20 years before I came in some guy had brought in a set of Plug Eights. they did make a key to work it but it was made from a Latch from a old mortise lock. they do worki got rid of the Cuffs. because the bolt was ruined no one around here could fix them. but people do weird things when they have a set of cuffs with them.

I think your last assumption of the story is the right one. Sounds like the type of thing a bigger bro would do.

I've had one ask me before if she could borrow a set, and another one that would just sit there. moving the ratchet arm on the cuffs.

I have had Many a lady that was "Visiting me" get a very evil grin when they see my handcuffs. I think that women have a very evil side to them.

The evil grin you are speaking of, was my "bread and butter" in college. tanking a bet with a guy was (from my perspective) boring to watch. I would read the audience and they would be "OK" with it. Put the key in the hand of a "evil grinning" female and watch the audience light up. The escape was the same. Threats of "flushing the key down the toilet" or "throwing out the window" only made the audience tension better. I of course would be "terrified" by the thought of losing "the only" real handcuff key in the place. Yes, some ladies do have an evil side.
