Has anyone worked this market?

I have worked wine festivals, worked for the Crown Royal distributor along with the Red Bull handout gang...
In each case the distributor paid my fee. |

Yes.
I worked for AB as a Bud Light magician for a while. Is that all you want to know. (of course it isn't). To answer all the obvious questions: They found me - I was working a gig someone there thought I'd be a good match. They paid me a fixed rate, less than my fee, but decent especially when I did a couple of different places in a night, plus I was young and flirting with chicks at bars AND getting paid seems like a good deal No I won't tell you my 'top 10' routines. No I don't have any tips for helping you get the same gig. These may not be what you want to know, but I tried to guess what you were really asking. I assumed you wanted more a response than just "yes". |

I too have worked this type of event. Money was so-so, but the audience was fun!

I think you should try pursuing any venue you can when trying to get a gig. There's a lot of untapped potential. We're about to start pitching strolling magic to some of the local wineries here. It should be a blast!

Do these involve you going from bar to bar entertaining people and selling the booze?

Just entertaining people and keeping them happy while they work their way towards inebriation.

This is a fascinating market that I was completely unaware of even existing within our field.
Suspectacts, would you mind describing more of the performance end of things? Now I don't mean tricks. What I mean is where did they position you to perform, what were you matched up with (were you alone or with other promotional staff), was anything besides magic expected of you (did you deliver a product message, etc), what were the hours that you worked, any particular reason as to why you stopped with this style of performance, etc. Thanks in advance! -Matt (TK) PS- While this was addressed to suspectacts of course anyone else within this market is more than welcome |

Matt,
I Have worked two of these promotions in the past with two different companies. The first was a whisky company that only required me to wear a pin promoting their brand name. I did my regular routine strolling about each bar for about 30 minutes. Then it was on to the next bar. As I recall, I performed at about 5 bars that evening that were all geographically close to one another. There was an employee of the liquor company that accompanied me to each bar. The second time I worked this sort of gig was for a beer company. Similar performing conditions, but they had me use playing cards with their logo on the back and do a specific effect in my sets (three card monte with the middle card turning out to be a free drink of their product at the bar.) I only did three bars in one evening for this promotion and was at each one for about an hour. Again, a company employee representative accompanied me to each location. In both of these cases, I didn't solicit the gigs... They came to me through agents. Hope that's the info you're looking for. Regards, Lyndel |

Café members I hope this information helps...
I have worked liquor promotions and here are my thoughts. I found out about this type of gig from a friend of mine. The company I approached was Capital Beverage. Basically I called them up and asked who was in charge of their liquor promotions? In my area they were the same people in charge of the "Bud Light Girls"..."Miller Light Girls"...basically cute young girls in logo outfits that hang out in bars passing out key chains and other trade show type trinkets. I called them up...found out who was in charge...did a small pitch over the phone...and requested a meeting. The purpose of the meeting was to show them how I could really advertise their products in various bars. Meeting was VERY easy...basically a bunch of "beer guys" sitting around a table. I did some basic customized magic and they were blown away. Not that the magic was that great...they were guys...that's why they liked the magic. I had a deck of Bud Light cards that I turned into an Invisible Deck...they thought this was THE BEST TRICK IN THE WORLD. They immediately wanted to make a deal. I ended up doing 4-5 bars per night. Basically 30 minutes at each bar for a set fee of $100 / bar. I would get anywhere from $500-$1,000 per week. When I was much younger this was not bad cash...especially for going to bars! Seems great...but there are many negatives. For one...if this is not really your scene...then you will probably hate it. Also, you will come home every night smelling like smoke...you will need to have a separate outfit just for this gig...and keep it in the garage...otherwise you home will smell like smoke. If you are a smoker...then I guess this is not a problem. The hours are great...if you are single. I usually worked M-Th nights (weekends are too crowded in most bars) anywhere from 7-midnight. If you have a family this will be a problem. The performing conditions are less than perfect. Most of the time the bars are too dark and too loud to perform most types of magic...some places on my list I couldn't even perform, as the conditions were impossible...in these cases I would end up just standing around for most of the time. For me this was not ethical since I was technically being paid to perform for 30 minutes. I lasted about 7 months before I decided to terminate the contract. I personally didn't like being away from my wife almost every night and we had a child on the way! For me it just wasn't what I wanted to be doing at that point in my life. If I had discovered this venue back in college that be another story… Anyway, just wanted to let you know some of the pros and cons of this biz. I hope someone finds this information useful...
