How much does it cost YOU each time you perform a show? (I understand you pass these expenses on to the customer)
You know, for things like, Flash paper, pyrotechnics, mouth coils, torn cards, rope, cards thrown to audience, Clear balloons for your needle through balloon, and other items you have to stock up on and replace for each show. Just curious.

Very interesting question! I would think that total operating expenses would have to be included and then ammortized per show. Things like travel, wardrobe, promotional expenses, advertising, personnel. Maybe you don't want to include these things. They are certainly of less importance to amateurs or semi-pros, but they are part of the real costs of doing shows.
Counting the things you describe, which for me include items like index cards and golf pencils, plus pieces of string, a couple lightbulbs, a broom, I usually spend about thirty dollars per show. Counting total operating expenses, I seem to be at about 320 dollars per show. At least that's what my quick calculation came to. --Christopher Carter |

I don’t know how many strictly magicians I can speak for – but almost next to nothing. Most of my effects are self-contained and do not need to be replenished.
Out of your list – torn cards might be my only expense per show – and a deck of cards is like $2.99 for 52 cards – so if I only tear a couple cards a night – it costs mere pennies for me to perform. As to what I charge my customers….that’s a flat rate that never changes regardless of materials I use. That becomes my burden – not the spectator’s. Blessings, |

I spend about $10 per show as I do throw cards and mouth coils as well as paper tears around quite a bit. The balloons for twisting add up a bit as well but the total for all is around $10.
