I went to my local woodworking supply store and learned the larger magnets were difficult to remove from the metal shelf, especially the packages!
The clerk told me that they had to move the rare earth magnets from the end displays... they had a tendency to cling to merchandise as the customer passed.
POOF!

The magnet above is nickel plated. (Oh, by the way, the exact same magnet is about $8 at http://www.magnet4sale.com, compared to $27 here !)

I have the M5 system ... make sure if you use these magnets that you never get it close to somebodies eyes ... many times people have small metal fragmets in their eyes for one reason or another. If a magnet gets near the eyes these metal shavings could damage the eye. My brother who is a physician pointed this out to me.

Have experienced some of these things with the raven and earth magnets I use in several tricks. Those little guys are sure hard to get apart sometimes. I took stopped my watch only to have it come back the next day. Be careful out there.

Careful with these magnets they can suprise you. I was trying out a magnetic half dollar with neodyminium under the table. Get anyhwere nere some metal table stucture and it forgets all about the coin you are working with and goes for the table structure! Makes a loud whack that that kills the effect! I had to slide it to the edge to free it. My hards weren't strong enough otherwise.

You should definitely practice with these and get use to handling them in various environments before using them in your act.
They're strong, but they won't cause steak knives to come flying at you as you walk down the aisle of a restaurant. The strength is exponentially related to the distance from a ferromagnetic metallic object. That is, it's not a nice predictable smooth linear increase or decrease in attraction, it rapidly increases and decreases; it would be a steep curve if plotted on a graph.

I had an embarassing moment with mine. I was wearing an ankle strap and I pulled my car up outside a restaurant where I has meeting some friends. As I got out, my leg suddenly slammed against the bottom part of the car door, with quite a thud.
A bunch of people sitting outside stared at me, surely thinking I must have been crazy. To cover up, all I could think of was to say "*** car! Lock is jammed again!" When I pulled my leg away, the strap stretched a bit before pulling the magnet back against my ankle, painfully. Fortunately I had learnt earlier, that if you use a magnet in a strap, make sure it is unable to come out of the pocket/pouch in the strap. If I hadn't have sealed it in properly it would come sliding out the bottom of my trousers and stuck to the car door. Ankle strapping also has one other potential problem. Beware of metal bars on chairs and under tables!!! Simon |
