Is the problem that it takes a long time to start rotating or that the length of time is very inconsistent? What's the average wait?

Experimentation is needed to determine the correct placement and type of glass one which to place the pen. I have timed the movements of the pen (the first move onto the clip and then the second rotation) and have not gotten consistent times. This makes it a challenge to talk it up appropriately. Needless to say, if you stand there and stare at the pen intently (as if your intense mental powers are being tested to the max), it is as exciting as watching the paint peel from the walls.
Any suggestions as to presentation to take up the time for the pen to move? (By the way, I've timed it anywhere from 30 to 50 seconds for the first movement! Perhaps there is some variation due temperature or set up) |

Try a narrow mouth shot glass, I get it to move in about 5 - 10 seconds. Buy a few identical Sanford Uniball pens and shot glasses and do a Bob Cassidy type presentation it really takes this effect into a higher realm. See Artful Mentalism of Bob Cassidy for the routine.

I tried it on a narrow mouth shot glass, as you suggested, and, again, it took 45 seconds to make the initial movement. Perhaps there is a variability in these pens...some move quicker than others. It seems that there are others who have this same problem with what seems to be an inordinate amount of time between setup and movement.

I think mentalism is supposed to be a bit longwinded. 45 seconds is nothing for a good mentalism trick. and I think the inconsistency can be a benefit because if you do the trick again it will make it more believable since it moves at different intervals. this takes suspicion off of a mechanical gimmick. plus its super cheap, 1/4 the price of ceseral pen.
