Hi Doug...
Great tribute...I listened to the radio segment...Homer Tate must have been a one-of-a-kind. I didn't realize Mr. Tate hailed from the Phoenix area...living in Scottsdale, I'm within 30 or so miles away from where Mr. tate had his shop back in the 50's. It's great that you are carring on a tradition that would surly pass away...no matter what age or era we are living...I truely beleive there will always be a need for some to have and display...great gaffs. But without artists like yourself, who make...and make available, great gaffs...there would be a part of the public that wouldn't get to experience attractions like "The Thing"! Thank you Doug...for sharing this special opportunity to learn a bit about Mr. Tate...and his legacy...and congrats to you for keeping it "alive"! Continued Success... Doc Dazzal |

Thanks Doc!
I've always been curious about him...luckily on Mon. his grandaughter eMailed me out of the blue and by Tuesday the web page was up. hahaha. I needed a break from making 'Heads' anyway. Tate was a wonder indeed. Most of his 'attractions' were after all pretty clueless from the standpoint of being realistic...laughable at best...BUT from the angle of Primitive or Outsider Art it is vibrant, raw and and pure genius....almost a form of dimensional grafitti. His Jungle stuff was a kick and is very rare to find...one needs to see his 'catalog' sheets to appreciate the range of weirdness he came up with and showmen BOUGHT to display as real. I truely love Outsider and Tribal Art and someone somewhere must have a bunch of Tate's and don't even know it. I have some catalog pages somewhere, but I can't find them...I'm attempting to get some on the page. As to gaff makers...there have been many...there are still a handfull...but most do taxidermy...I always found that stuff 'lifeless' compared to the product of an artists hands...an odditiy in itself I guess...sure, a stuffed two headed duck looks real...it IS real...the trick is to put the illusion of 'former life' into a piece of clay.
