I have Diamond Jim's book and his videos. They are both on my personal favorites list. The effects are refinements of material that he has perfected in the real world over the past years as a professional magician. One only has to look at the "real world" footage on the videos to realize the impact Diamond Jim's magic has on laypeople. Better yet, do as I have done and go see him in person at one of the 4 restaurants he performs at here in the Dallas area. He is a master of his craft, and to say his magic is mundane is to not understand the true impact his material has on people.....laypeople and magicians alike. Here's to a genuine "worker" from whom any of us can learn to improve our craft!

This is the thing. I would way rather put other material in my routine than diamond jim's stuff. I don't want to restore a piece of paper so I can have an excuse to use flash paper. I like his pieces of eight routine. But the rest is just the same old thing. By the way, how many people do you really see actually laughing as he is doing that comedy shuffling routine?

You're right about that...hahaha... 'OOh, it's the clinton shuffle-nothing gets done!'... altho that wasn't too bad a joke. The only thing i like was his ring and string routine. Besides that, the tape was considerably...fair.

I think his baseball routine is good and it DOES add. It takes Bannon's 8-Ball prediction and gives it MEANING and it's definitely a WORKER. I see a lot of beginners bash something because they weren't fooled. Duh...you know how most of the stuff works. Are you going to bash a trick because it uses a double lift? Doubles don't fool me but they kill laypeople.

Most of the people who are criticizing the material are doing just that--criticizing it, not bashing it. Further, many of them are FAR from beginners.
Some people love Jim's stuff while others don't care for it. The same can be said for everyone. I have had people tell me they were totally unimpressed by my sponge routine, and others who say it is the best ever! Both are right--because each is given his opinion of how useful the stuff is to him. It's OK if you like something. It's also OK if you don't. People take this stuff WAY too seriously--it's just magic tricks after all! So please, feel free to post your opinion, positive or negative. Just do so based on the merits of the material and don't give someone a bad time just because they disagree with you. I think Jim's ring and string routine is quite good, BTW.

Dear readers,
Thanks for posting your opinions about my material. I wrote Pockets Full of Miracles to share my perspective on magic, my handling of certain classics, and my own innovations. I myself have learned something from every book or video that I have ever purchased. I look for the good in things. Thank you Scott for your kind words about my Ring & String routine. I wish you had mentioned that in your review of my book. What annoys me is when people go out of their way to insult the material. People say that I shouldn't take it personal, but my work is an extension of me. I put a lot of time and care into my magic, so of course I don't want to receive bad reports. Shouldn't the negative posters state that the material doesn't suit them, rather than saying something is awful or boring. Ben says how much he dislikes the entirety of my work then goes on to state how much he likes my Pieces of Eight routine. I bet had Ben talked to me face to face he would have never been as nasty as his first post. And Ben when shooting the videos for PFM there were many takes. Once an audience hears the same jokes repeatedly they become less funny. Try the comedy shuffing routine on an audience and you'll see that it is pure gold; at least it is in my hands. Remember, words are actions! You are no less stating your position when posting. Are we a brotherhood or is this a *****ing contest? I'm here to help further the art of magic. Who's with me? While I find both good and bad opinions on someone's material helpful in making buying decisions I do not understand nor find it helpful the need to make an opinion on someone's "presentation" especially since we're told time and time again not to copy anyone's presentation but to develop our own style.
For a nice response to his "critics" see Ted Lesley's response to "How do you like Ted Lesley" in the "Penny for Your Thoughts" forum. I think Mr. Lesley's and Mr. Diamond's response above are well thought out, whether you like their material or not. We can pationately disagree on anything here and we do not have to like every book, video or effect on the market but lets at least be respectful of each other. |
