Does anyone perform this effect? Seen it performed?
Aldo Columbini has a trick called Cone-Tact based on Dai Vernon's Cone, Ball and Handkerchief. Just wondering what the level of sleights may be. Thanks, John Cesta |

The sleights are basic. Like anything else, you just need to make a commitment to practice. (He has some ball-out-of-the-mouth stuff that may prove distatesful to some.)

Bill Okal and George Millward both perform outstanding versions of Dai Vernon's Cone and Ball.

I just picked up the props for the Vernon routine from my local brick and motor, and they are fantastic. Made by Frank Starsinic at theambitiouscard.com. Very, very nice.
Aldo's routine is nice. The balls he uses are smaller because part of his routine uses the mouth. Harry Riser has a nice routine using a Pill Box in his book. And of course, the brilliant Vernon routine from The Dai Vernon Book of Magic. |

Aldo's basically starts with the Vernon and then goes into balls from mouth. Not very classy. Also, since he needs smaller balls to fit the mouth, it kind of detracts from one of the principle components of the original routine, that being the balls are so large, how could they disappear so effortlessly and completely?
My recommendation, stick with the original. kirk G. |

I have Revelations 10. He details some of the sleights used, but he doesn't "perform" the routine.

The hankerchief is there mainly to provide cover for the large ball. This leads to some nice hankerchief and ball work that has little to do with the cone. As a whole, it's a nice... shall we say... vintage... routine. I've only seen this played silently, set to music. I wonder how it would go as a spoken routine? I'm hoping to work this into a Ren Faire street act, sans music, but haven't come up with the dialogue to go with it yet.

I purchased and read Aldo's routine and don't even know why he published it, except maybe to make some bucks selling a cheap cone and some superballs. The original is far better and, as someone mentioned already, the bigger balls make the effect as it seems impossible to hide or manipulate them. The tiny balls Aldo supplies are just plain silly and the mouth nonsense is totally out of place.
I had the good fortune of seeing Father Paul Zipfel do the original Vernon routine exactly as taught and that inspired me to learn it and add it to my stand-up work. There have been many variations of the props for this wonderful routine, but never, in my opinion, a worthile variation of the routine and moves as described by Lewis Ganson in the Dai Vernon Book of Magic. |

Sometiems Aldo is dead on and sometimes he's very far off. I always change a routine I learn, to fit my style, but some shouldn't be changed.

Danny Korem did an amazing cone and ball routine. I saw it on a video called 'Kids Stuff.' He used a descriptive patter which worked well. For the life of me I couldn't figure out some of his moves. It was truly amazing stuff.

Jack Flosso's booklet, "Magic of the Masters" has a stand alone version of Dai Vernon's Cone and Ball effect. It is authored by Dai Vernon and is very nice. Sleights or not too difficult, even for an amateur like myself.
