There's a place in my town that I go to from time to time just to practice, test things out and learn how to perform in different atmospheres. I'm lucky enough to have a place near my home like this that's all in one building.
There's a bar here in Kalamazoo Michigan called Wayside West (Click to visit the site). It's a HUGE bar! Imagine a high school gym with balconies and different rooms. Then more rooms added on. For example there's a large room with a bunch of TV's and a large number of tables and couches. This is the quieter place in the building that's more like a restaurant. There's also what they call a Martini bar in the building that is a little more relaxed. A lot of guys in business suits hang out in there. Now there is also a game section with pool tables and a few other games. Many tables around this area as well with many people hanging around. Another section of the place is a series of "C" shaped couch arrangements that'll hold about 15 people in each section with a large coffee table in the middle. Then there is the dance floor area with an upper and lower VIP section (Costs from $5 to $20 to get in depending on the night). Now, this is right down the road from Western Michigan university so they get a lot of college students in there on certain nights. Wednesdays and Saturdays the place gets so packed that even though it's a huge place you're sometimes elbow to elbow with everyone. Why am I mentioning this place? Because it's a great place to learn how to perform in difference atmospheres. It's easy to perform for a few people sitting at a table waiting for there dinner but this place offers some extreme conditions. For the most part it's a friendly atmosphere though. It's very different performing for a real busy crowd. You have to learn to perform with no table and often surrounded. You have to deal with people coming up to you and asking if you can show there friends something they saw you do. But now there's no table to do the trick they requested that requires a table. I could probably write a book on just the experiences I've had in this place and all the things I've learned from performing there. There's just so much to be learned and it's a great place to learn them. Now, I'm not saying you should go out to a bar and start drinking. There's nothing wrong with drinking a soda in a bar and you actually should if you're performing. There are also other places to get some experiences other then bars like this. You also might be able to find a variety of places instead it all being in one place. So, if you don't have a place like this in your area to try things out and learn different performing conditions. Or a number of places with different atmospheres. If you're ever in south Michigan and want to check this place out and test yourself. Or just have fun performing. Be sure to let me know and I'll meet you there.. |
