I am not sure if this is a problem or not, but here it is. I know the trick down pat. Every move is good. And I have made my brother and father get that "wtf!?" look on their face. The problem I have is the story that goes along with it. Myself, being 18, would have no business being in Virginia City, or in a casino/gambling. So I feel that the story is out of place when I tell it due to my age. And the story is half the effect.

-It is easier to fight for one's principles than to live up to them. -The secret impresses no one. The trick you use it for is everything. See you space cowboy... |

I don't know the trick or the story, but could you change it to an illegal game you and some high school friends were holding in someone's garage one weekend?
I need a stage name.

You could always use the "This was passed down to me...(Grandfather, Father, Uncle, retired gambler)" tact!
FWIW Cheers!

You could also re-tell a dream you had where you were older and journeyed to Virginia city..and go from there. Congrats on wanting to personalize your magic.

I don't have a solution, but I admire the problem.

I'll add a late comment.
My routine for this talks about what you can learn when you're stranded in a bus station -- so, it's still a self-deprecating story about a con game. I don't describe the action as a shuffle, I just count the cards in passing. JesterJ |

Joey, I'm glad you recognized the initial patter as a problem for yourself. Sometimes youngsters use patter that is not appropriate at all and simply come across as children playing the part of adult magicians. Occassionally this can be cute but for most it grates, because it just doesn't fit.
Another example would be a youngster with a road sign version of Crazy Compass talking about when he was working on the roads etc. As Stanyon said, you could relate it as a story an older relative told you as an experience that happened to him. Never take any given patter at face value, think about whether it is relative to yourself or if it could be personalized better. Paul. |

I just recently started toying in my head with a way to use this trick as a bridge to or from Skinner's 3Card Monte and the Mental Photography Deck. I also thought the Virginia City patter was a bit outdated.
I'm thinking you could talk about the previous Monte effect and how maybe they'd like to see another variation that uses the blank cards that you've now produced via the mental photography trick. You can discuss how you recently learned this by watching a street hustler and that it should be much more fair for the spectator since use only one face card and 3 blanks. Something along those lines. I'm not sure it needs a ton of cute patter. |

Some nice ideas, thanks. I thought this thread was long dead. But I have come up with something I think works, not sure on the quality of the story. The just of it is I learned the trick from a friend that works as a dealer at a casino. I am kind of pressed for time here so I won't go into detail.

I go the guy in the new york subway route. I mean the story givin is just a stepping stone. You could adapt any story to it that you wish. And it is ther that you will find the Master. Your on the right track on being creative. best of luck.

I just started performing this trick, and since I'm from Europe, that Virginia City thing doesn't work well for me.. So I just changed the place to Barcelona, and I'm telling the story about some guy cheating tourists on Ramblas. It works perfect.
I'm sure there are many many stories you could tell during this trick, it doesn't have to be something about gambling. If I was doing it for kids, maybe I'd tell em the cards where kids with clean shirts and one (the ace) spilt ketchup on his shirt, and now he's trying to get away from Mum, or whatever... |
