Hi all,
I wanted to pick up a Waltzing Matilda, designed by Steve Dusheck, and now known as a Ballerina Hank and made by Tenyo. Of course, numerous generic version are available for about a third less cost, but mainly, I'd like to hear from those of you who've had or seen and tested both, and which did you prefer, the original gimmick or the "new improved" version. tanky ! PS.. what's the Don Wayne version ? Same thing or different ?

I saw Jonathan Neal do the Ballerina hank (tenyo) at Hollywood Magic and it was a thing of beauty.
Of course it was Jonathan Neal doing it but the item is great for a danceing hank routine. I believe the Don Wayne effect is a very expensive mechanical prop.(I could be wrong) |

Waltzing Matilda is a small 9" or 12" silk that is caused to move between the hands and about with no cover.
Don Wayne Dancing hank is a stage item, or the audience must be several feet away from the performer. It is becoming hard to locate the original that currently sells for $45. Check it out at http://www.stoners.com The original Waltzing Matilda, was always a home made prop. I would have to admit that Tenyo make well made magic items. |

The Don Wayne thing was almost an afterthought - not what I'm after apparently, thanks to those who clarified that. Anyone else care to comment on the new gimmick vs the old, in terms of preference ?

Hi Mystician.
The original concept for the Ballerina Hank can be found in Rice's Encyclopedia on Silk Magic. Steve Dusheck had the first marketed version called Waltzing Matilda. It's an excellent piece of magic that can play into any realm of magic and be done from less than five feet away without any fear of detection. Tenyo, with Steve's permission, released Ballerina Hank. The newer gaff is a better fit and more secure. It is a bit smaller than Ducheck's gaff and has a zig zag bend in one end that gives you more control over the older gaff. It's slightly more rigid also allowing better control. It is complete with a 9 inch scarf and instructions. Experimentation with larger scarves can be quite interesting in the way each different size scarf becomes animated. Hope that helped you a bit. |

Hi TM,
That helps. Sponge seems to prefer the older gimmick, but it will probably come down to my own personal preference no matter how I slice it. Overall, I think more people seem to like the Tenyo version, actually. Might you say it's more akin to the zombie gimmick than the Waltzing version ?
