A photograph of a prediction
Held up at the moment of insight. But wait, that was what WOULD have happend if you did not change your mind a moment ago.. or was it? You know those old bits where the image in a photo changes due to heat or chemisty? Just a thought

A photograph of a prediction is strong; after all, a photograph must seem (in the minds of our audiences) harder to mess with. But if the photograph changes, this suggests that there is a way for the performer to alter/control what the picture represents, thus making the use of the photograph weaker as a prediction.
Still like the idea though, as well as the theme of what-if. |

If the performer shows the prediction AFTER the selection, you have mentalism (or time travel). However, if the performer shows the prediction BEFORE, and the image changes to match the selection... you have bizarre magic. In this case, the behind the scenes view that the audience gets is much more provocative than the simple "but what if" that ordinary mentalism brings.
This was kind of shown in mass media culture in the first "Back to the Future" movie where the parents start to vanish from a photograph. I'm directly suggesting that the prediction or photo is an artifact of a quantum mechanical model called the "many worlds view". A much more provocative subject that like good horror, needs to be shown but not discussed, and only shown by inference to be most effective. Trivial example, going back to adolescence and fickle feelings: imagine a photo of your girlfriend, that always shows the young woman you are seening AT THAT TIME/MOMENT. You only have that one photo in your wallet, and you show it to them saying "see I carry a picture..." The guy who painted that portrait of Dorian Grey steps into the twenty first century.

Okay, I'm getting it. Neat idea. Is it do-able ? You suggested "old bits", so I guess it is, but how can you alter a photograph, particularly in real time (if that was the idea) ? I would think Polaroids would be the most suceptible.. snap a picture of one thing, but as it develops, somethng else emerges in the picture ..
I have some infrared LEDs which are not visible at all.. I wonder what would happen if I shone one on a polaroid as it was developing ? Maybe I'd get a "ghost" in the picture. I also have a UV keychain LED I could experiment with, but that's quite visible. How about snapping a picture of a blank piece of paper, but when it develops, ghostly writing is visible revealing a prediction. How hard is it to pre-tamper with polaroids ? This is sounding pretty cool now !

Hofzinser had a similar idea in which a chosen playing card appeared in a photograph. I'm sure we've all seen the modern version of that with the little kid dressed like a magician.
I'm working on something similar with a photograph of Hofzinser that I have in which the Dr. writes a message to a spectator on his own photograph. Rick

Coming at it from the other angle, if one were to change the photograph, would that then change one’s reality? Imagine a young woman, she gets married to a great guy, who turns out not to be so great. Still, the Hawaiian honeymoon snaps are nice, and so after the divorce, she takes her favourite photo (a golden sky, a glittering sea, and urgh! the pair of them holding hands) to the local photoshop, and a bit of cut and paste, cloning, and careful editing later, and she’s painted her slimeball ex right out of the picture. Only trouble is, he seems to have actually disappeared! He’s not answering his calls and there’s someone else living in his apartment. In fact, it’s as though he never existed, and only she can now remember him. Still, that doesn’t particularly bother her. Some time later, she starts dating again, and - oh bliss! - she finds someone much better. Oh yes! He’s really nice. In fact, she’d like a photo of the two of them for her purse. Now, as it happens, she’s still really fond of that honeymoon scene - so romantic - and so she takes the edited photograph off to the photoshop, and 5 minutes later, her new beau has been pasted into the middle of that lovely scene. (Of course, he's rather surprised when he finds himself instantly transported 2000 miles, to Hawaii...) Anyway, the important thing is... she’s very happy. And if things don’t work out, she can always rub him out later, if need be. Come to think of it, that headland in the background - the one with the town on it - could do with a bit of pruning. And the more she looks, the more she thinks that things would look much nicer with just the ONE sun. Regards, Caleb Strange.

I like the idea of things appearing in photographs,be it cards,a person in the distance holding something that they don't see at first but later transpires to be a prediction etc.

Hell's Hustle. by Keith Lack, Uses an "actual" antiquated photograph of "satan" holding three cards - which changes into a much grimmer gent holding one card....
A thread about it occurred here: http://www.themagiccafe.com/forums/viewt......orum=109 and you can SEE the effect and purchase it here: http://www.arlenstudio.com/background.htm I think that it is terriffic item, perfectly suited for the antiquated and cabinet of curiosa oriented bizarrist. Has a macabre "Deadwood" feel to it as well. I picked it up, used, on EBAY, actually. It is simple, and all in the telling. But the effect builds from something innocent to....a very battle for the magician and spectator's immortal souls. One must be sensitive in performing this..but it can be real bizarre theatre...trust one who has performed this and chilled many a soul with it... Other touches could be added. I singed the "second" card...The smell of sulphur/ brimstone might arise. The photo album may be treated with the odor of Frankincense to evoke the world of rituals and fallen angelic beings. |

Nice setup and use of a classic device. Wonderful! But how did he get a picture of my great grandfather?

On the topic of changing photo's. Before coming the bizarre side I devised and performed a photographic prediction. Basically there would be a stack of about 60 post cards all with different psychical facial characteristics on them. They would be shown openly to all be different. The card stack would be handed round the audience and people freely selected the facial aspects of our imaginary subject. At the end of the routine not only would all the items selected match those of a prediction but they would also match a Photograph, and this was often someone in the audience.
As an aside to the routine and as a build up I spoke a bout how photos are permanent reminders and memories held forever in the state at which they where taken. We would then talk about how easy it is for the photo to go wrong or the developing to be corrupt, and the picture and the memory would be lost forever or certainly changed or altered. This would bring me to a photo taken in Egypt of a statue outside the tomb of Ramsis IV, and as my wife took the picture the head of the statue was missing!! We then thought would it not be better if we could control the image selected and stored on the paper - and proceeded to alter the image to bring the statues head back into view. The picture could then be given away, signed etc... Just thought I would share the story.
the road we travel is lined with beauty but as with all roads, mind the pot holes...

Here's another idea based on the queen of spades trick!? (don't know the original name)
a selection is made for example six of spades but to reveal a wrong one let say queen of spades. but if the spectator would look closely he/she can see that the queen of spades is holding a card the "six of spades" (this can be only done with a bicycle deck) applying this principle to a photograph. but if you want a visual one, how about a snap change... |
