Does anybody know where I can find the patter for the blade box pitch? Is it written up somewhere?

Eric:
The blade box is a pitch act. Like all pitches its got built in psychology and little touches of linguistic mojo that you ignore at your own peril. Can I get an "amen," Don? |

Zack,
That is true. I would just personally prefer to build my own presentation - but you are correct that having the basic linguistics and built-in psychology would give a very good starting point. I don't recall if there is a complete script or not, but there is some good work on the blade box in an older issue of MUM Magazine (it's either the Todd Robbins issue or the all sideshow issue). I only have one copy of each, but you can usually get back issues from the SAM. I'll investigate further. Eric |

Kondini,
The best part is that there is a "ding" associated with the act. Once the talker has explained to the crowd that his lovely young assistant Serpentina has been bitten by venomous reptiles such an excessive number of times that all of her joints have been rendered supple by the digestive enzymes of the venom, and that this is how she is able to contort her shapely body to elude the cruel blades, he offers to provide patrons with a closer look at her contorted form within the box, for only a slight extra charge. When the patrons do not rush the stage, her reaches through the lid, and after the sound of ripping Velcro is heard, holds aloft the bikini top that prevented patrons from seeing Serpentina as her Creator shaped her to enter the world. Unfortunately, once money has changed hands and the innocent rustics are given a look inside the box, they discover that the talker only holds a duplicate of that part of Serpentina's costume whose absence they had so earnestly desired. Yours, Paul |

Thanks Doc,,,so the ruse is the same as the old sword cab and basket expose,,,,the promise of a little extra flesh for an extra $ Guess the lines can be biult up as you like so the patter should be the talkers own rather than common scripted.

The blade box information from MUM Magazine that I mentioned yesterday can be found in the "Sideshow Magic" issue. February 1998, Vol. 87 No. 9. PP. 33-35 & 38. The write-up includes Julius Chick IV's "Blade Box Speil".
If you're looking for the basic plot and the ding, this should help you out. However, as I stated in my original post (and as Kondini also said), I would still recommend that you use this only as a blueprint to build your own presentation from. Just my opinion, I could be wrong... |

Julius Chick worked for a season with us out at Coney Island. I taught him how to do a the blade box. The plans for the box are based on the Burling Hull plans. These are the same plans that Abbotts puts out. It's not certain who came first, Abbotts or Hull. They are also the same plans in the Osborne illusion book. I think they are in Haunted Illusions.

According to Bobby Reynold's, his Blade Box is unique in that his former partners ashes are incorporated in the bottom of the thing...so he get's to still be on the
road even though metaphysically challanged... D

Doug,
To be on the road is not why Jack Waller's ashes were epoxied into the bottom of the box. You and I both know that it is show Jack would forever have beautiful woman laying down on top of him for the rest of eternity. |

Yeah...but these days there are GUYS jumping in the box so I thought I'd save old Jack the humiliation and was saying matter of factly that 'he gets to be on the road' rather than reporting his last wish...

I worked for Jack Waller for a few season's when he lived in Seal Beach.I was also there just before he died.I remember him saying severals times he wanted to be epoxied in the bottom of a blade box but I had NO idea they really did it.

According to Bobby Reynolds, it was done. And Bobby wouldn't lie. Just ask his eleven wives.
Jack Waller's show was the first sideshow I saw and it inspired me to go down this path. |

How to get Bobby in a bladebox?
Throw in two cents, and let him have the scent of the cash.

I have seen many acts of kindness and generosity from Bobby over the years...and he has been VERY generous with me...I guess you just have to know how to 'work him'.
