Hi all,
Yesterday I received an unsolicited ball-point pen with my business name, address and phone number on it as a free sample from the National Pen Company. They sent this in an effort to get me to purchase these pens as a way to advertise my services. The cost would be about 50 cents per pen. Has anyone tried using pens as a give-away? If so, how effective have they been? |

I'd rather a 2 card monte for 50 cents
I would stay away from pens because what they have done to you is not what you actually get- Let me explain You may have been surprised to find the pen with YOUR name on it which is a personalised thing. But your customers are not getting the personalised experience - they are getting 1 of a thousand pens. How many pens do you own- probably a few but do you actually notice whats on them? I doubt it- instaed go with the two card monte custom printed- the reason why is if the person receiving it performs it- it advertises your company- where as if the person writes with your pen- they are not really advertsing your product. with The two card monte you can get a sales message with them. just my thoughts but it's 3 in the morning- I'm going to bed YAY cheers, Dave |

Plus if your pen was like mine, it was junky and big.

You can get Bic pens with custom info on them. I've been considering getting some to use with Gregory Wilson's recap. The routine itself always gets reactions, and I figure then give them the pen. I agree that just handing out pens doesn't seem too special, but if you perform magic with something and then give it away, people seem to like it much more.

At 50 cents a pen, there's no way I would do that! You can get much cheaper things, just do a quick search on the internet. At one time, I found pens for around 15 cents each, and that was just looking on the internet.
In my opinion, I wouldn't go with a pen. Magicians are different. People expect the unusual, the exciting, and the spectacular with magicians. Give them something completely different, something magic, something they'll never forget! |

As I look through a drawer at my desk which has stuff from the last nonmagic conference I attended, I note 6 pens from different companies. They seem to be popular with large companies as an advertising give-away, but I could not name any company associated with the pens without looking first. Interesting . . . I think. Oh, and by the way, all of these pens were smaller and nicer than the free sample I got in the mail.
Thanks to those who replied. I do not intend to purchase any of the advertising pens. |

Now for the flip side...
Printed pens have worked well for me, but don't go cheap. Get a nice looking and nice writing pen. Mine worked out to be about 50cents each but are nice looking. I enclose one when mailing out contracts so they have a pen handy to sign it! People have sent me many compliments on the pen. I used to sell advertising premiums (which is what this is) and a printed pen will go through many hands, and leave you message with each. If you get one show out of it..wasn't that worth 50 cents?

Too, what is it worth to YOU and your SUCCESS to be able to guarantee that someone will actually OPEN your mail???
"LUMPY Mail" has proven many times over to produce and intense WANT, Desire even NEED to OPEN just to see what's lumpy inside! (YES, even if you already know what's in side!) Certainly doesn’t need to be a PEN, but "Lumpy Mail" really rocks when it comes time to get that mail opened and noticed! (and ultimately READ and responded to...) I KNOW this and it still gets my attention every single time, EVEN when I know it’s one of those free pens from National… I STILL have this desire to OPEN that Envelope Every Single Time! I would gleefully pay MANY TIME more than that silly .50 cents you guys suggest to get such a positive response from my mail on the consistent basis as “Lumpy-Mail”, that is for SURE! (There are other thing one can do also, but that is for yet another topic.) The POINT: A "PEN" is not always ONLY a PEN! Sometimes, even often, it is a materful marketing weapoin in your "Lumpy Mail" campaign! It's all about perspective I guess... some will say it's not worth-it, others will say that it works for them and every combination there of... The BOTTOM LINE is RESULTS! - - the rest is irresponsible speculation that will have profound effects on your business and over-all success outcomes no matter how well meaning and intended! Rest on the fact that RESULTS COUNTS, speculation, opinion and guesswork walks! Just my experience and results on this matter. I am at your service and In HIS Service, TheDean Hankey <><
