The index category has gone 404, so I will ask the question anew.
Where do you advertise ? If you will, please include your local as this is very important. Thanks, Howdini

Well, first I am from the philadelphia area and we have a huge market of magicians. There is much competition, but I do what a lot of magicians in my area do NOT do.
1) I make sure that my show is top notch in every way from not only the show but how I talk to my customers, what I send out to them and how I act on the phone. I always remember that I must be a professional on and off stage. 2) There is a reason they call it show business. Many folks do the show part but often know nothing about the business side of what they are doing. I make it an effort to really dtrive to understand the business side of my magic and also learn as much about how to advertise and market myself in the best way that I can. With these in mind, I do a LOT more active advertising and marketing then I do passive. Passive forms of marketing or advertising are things like giving out business cards, placing a yellow pages ad, putting up a flyer some place, an ad in a parent style magazine. They are passive in that you place the ad and wait and hope that the suspect contacts you back. Active forms of marketing are where you are actively seeking and taking control of the sales process at all times. Every step of the way you are there going to get your gigs instead of them coming to you. You actively take a big role in your own success. A good marketer will do both passive and active forms and use them to benefit him or herself. In passive forms I advertise through: - My website - Flyers posted in gorcery stores and party stores - Business cards placed at various places through out my area for people to pick up Aactively I market in so many various ways that it would take me way to long to list all of them here. I actively market all the time and every chance I get. For me, I have found this has worked wonders for me and for getting the shows I want to have coming in. I will try and make an effort to post more about this later on if anyone would like me to. Kyle

Thanks. I just hope some of this may be of benefit to someone else. Ultimately you just have to go out there and try and test it out yourself and see what works best for you.
I learned a few years ago that if I wanted to increase my earnings by doing less shows, then there was something I was not doing that I needed to start doing. I had a good show. I provided a good service to my clients as well. I just could not figure out what it was. Then through some research and through some good friends I realized that I knew nothing about the business side of show business. I new nothing on how to market myself efficiently in order to get the shows I wanted. Now my last sentence is the key here. TO GET THE SHOWS THAT I WANTED. I was saying that to myself but never listening to my own advice. I was simply NOT getting the shows that I wanted. Rather I was waiting, wishing and hoping the shows would come to me. I soon realized that if I wanted the shows I wanted to be doing, then my philosophy needed to change. I needed to stop waiting for action to come to me and instead take action upon myself to actively seek out those shows., Instead of me waiting for the phone to ring. I would call and make the phone ring on a potential lead I was working. Instead of waiting for an e-mail to come from a client, I sent the e-mail out first. I learned that I simply had to take action into my own hands and that through direct action could come wonderful results. This also lead me to learning as much as I could about marketing. Here I was a graphic designer and artist for years. I designed many marketing pieces for others and still do yet I knew little to nothing about how marketing could work for me. Through a fw great websites, great friends etc. they lead me to discovering some key things that changed the way I do my magic and think about it in order to get the gigs I want to work. 1) That if you want success then you have to think success and you have to surround yourself with successful minded people 2) That sitting on your butt does nothing more then make your butt sore. If you want success then you have to go out there and take ACTION. 3) That instead of just using passive styles of marketing, I needed to also strive to use active styles and use them efficiently and make active marketing a habit 4) I needed to become organized and manage my clients, suspects and prospects. Only when you are organized, can you develop systems to remind yourself when to send out thank you e-mails, when to call etc. Organization was critical 5) That building relationships with prospects and clients meant everything. I learned that by staying in touch with people after the gig was important. That these people should not be forgotten, but that relationship shoiuld be nutured because those folks know my show,. what I provide and they can be the word of mouth and referral system I can set into action. These are just a few of the many things that I discovered and still use to this day to get more shows, the shows that I want to perform and so less shows while making more income for myself and enjoying every minute of it. I hope this helps you and that you get some tips and suggestions that might help. If I can go into details on any of this, or if you have opinions on any of it, please let me know. I would be happy to discuss it further with you or anyone else. It would be my pleasure. Kyle

I have to say that my own experience in my normal job (where I did a fair bit of marketing) and as a magician in a small town makes agree 100% with Kyle.
Do not wait for the phone to ring. If you do, you'll have one third of the work that you could have. Kyle's advice sounds pretty good from my experiences... Have a good act, do your research so you can allay any potential sticking points, a nice letter with references(easy to do), approach the people nicely, point out what's in it for them, network and followup. It can be all done low key. Most of my work comes from that approach and I'm being recommended on a solid basis by previous/continuing clients who have become my friends in some cases. My only advice is make sure that you're well prepared for the venues.
May your fingers never lose their deftness,
May your tongue always lead them down the garden path... Regards, Whiterabbit |

There is something my grandfather once told me about success. I don't know where it came from originally, but it's his WORDS that I remember to this day...
To reach success, you cannot use the elevator, you MUST take the stairs Thanks grandpa, and Kyle! |

You are most welcome. I hope I do not sink and I hope each of you do not as well. For me, I always am swimming. My problem is that I swim too fast lol. I am always researching, always staying active, asking questions, growing my magic and learning as much as I can about both the "show" and the "business" of show business. =)
If you want success, then you must be willing to take action upon yourself to acheive that success. It will not just come to you (unless you get lucky and win the lottery). lol In most cases we must learn to take immediate action if we want to get the rewards and obtain the goals we are after. For me, I would much rather be an active marketer and go out there and eagerly seek the jobs that I want to do, then sit by the phone hoping it will ring. Instead of hoping it will ring, I instead make the call myself and I get the phone to ring on a new lead or a prospect. I take control of my own success and anyone can learn to do the exact same thing if he or she is willing to spend some time to make it happen. Kyle
