Who witnenessed this effect ????
Read from Hocus Pocus website - Buoyant Ball Bearing In 2003, Bob White, the renowned close-up sleight-of-hand artist, told me how he happened to witness this effect. In the early 1960’s, with Roger Klause and other magician friends, he journeyed to Albuquerque, New Mexico, to attend a lecture by Dai Vernon. During a conversation at the bar, the Professor casually pulled a ball bearing out of his pocket. He showed it around, saying that his son had given it to him, that it was made out of a new kind of metal developed by the Navy, and that it had some unusual properties. He dropped it onto the bar, demonstrating its solidity and weight, and then without further ado dropped it into a glass of water where much to everyone’s astonishment it floated. Pulling it out of the water, he again dropped it on the bar for examination, and invited the onlookers to attempt to duplicate the miracle. For Bob and the gang, the floating ball bearing was the main topic of conversation for the nine-hour drive back to Dallas. Only those lucky enough to attend a Vernon lecture during that period in his career got the chance to see it. Thus, over the years, the buoyant ball bearing passed into history. Effect: A large, heavy ball bearing floats in a glass of water. The spectator may examine the ball bearing and even try to float it herself. Properly presented, it is quick, memorable, and impressive. Comes complete with everything needed to perform, including detailed instructions with hints and tips from some of today's top professionals. Kjellsorm,
Thank you forthe link. It cetainly seems interesting and the effect can be applied to a multiple of themes such as a theme involving the test in the old Salem days to determine if someone was a witch or not by throwing the unlucky victim in water to see if the person floated. If the person floated, the person was a witch and was burnt at the stack. If the person sank and drowned, the person died but at least the person was not a witch. A no win situation. Best regards, Michael

This effect is very intriquing! How much in the way of sleights is involved here?

A simple s-----. If you can do the bounce/no bounce ball effect, you can certainly do this. In fact, this is easier since the ball bearing is much smaller than the bounce/no bounce balls.
