It won't work in reverse. Once you place the panel over the pen, it "looks" normal. Part of my patter inlcudes "see how it makes the pen twist"? When I pull it away, it really is twisted. Since they saw the pen before untwisted, and then saw it twist right in their hand, it really does amaze them. A very powerful illusion.

I've looked at this many times, and it looks great! The only thing preventing me from buying it is the nagging voice in my head that's saying..."but you're not doing any magic! All you can really do is say 'Look what this piece of plastic can do'" It focuses the attention on the prop, not the performer.

It depends on how you present it. The prop provides the illusion, the performer provides the presentation. Like I said, this is not something you will use to entertain an audience of more than 5 in a casual setting. I think it's a wonderful change from the standard "props" like cards and coins and TT and silks. I only use this when I am approached or want to approach someone that would like to see an illusion. I don't ever count on a prop to entertain, it's the presentation that sells it. It's an illusion, so show it that way. That pen that looks twisted, is also an illusion. It's all in the presentation like all/most magic that is entertaining.

I really enjoy performing this. The first thing I did when I got it though was to make a new pen. I was actually able to make it in a sharpie, as that is really the only thing I use to write while performing. To do this, I had a friend hold a lighter under the pen while I twisted it. After a few seconds, I twisted the ends in opposite directions. Worked great. I present the effect as a comparison between science and magic. I use a real sharpie and have the spectator sign something, then I ask is they want to see something odd. At this point I get out the lens, and swith the pens. I put it on their hand, and show how the lens works talking about science and prisms and such. I then talk about how magic takes illusions like the one they are seeing, the twist in the pen due to the angled lens, and make it real. I slowly lower the lens, and move it to the side. Gets a great reaction, it happens in their hands. Good luck with this for those who do it.

Chris,
I think you gave me just the excuse I needed to go and buy it. Thanks!

Hi, I posted just up a bit and I have now bought one! it came back today and I love this effect, I had it on ebay for about £6 (if I cant say that then delete it)
We have a shop in a small freindly street in the uk and the people that own the shops around our know I do magic and they rate me on new tricks, sometimes I'm good but sometimes they tell me where to improve, well with this effect they are amazed, I done it to 4 people today and had no problems as everyone wanted to see what was happening and had to come closer and look down on it, they got there themselves! The best part is definatly when you remove the lens, and they are gobsmacked! If you hold it at an angle to there hand then move it slowly off, it seems to 'melt' the twist into it! (PM me for more details) Overall it is a little fiddley but well worth the effort. daz |

I use this effect a lot and I always get strong reactions from it. Murphys Magic Supplies produced a book featuring loads of different effects possible with the lens. May be worth checking out if you liked it.

Im not a big fan of RT. To me, it looks kind of cheap. Great for kids but it doesn't do much for me.

Can anyone suggest what refill would fit? I don't want to destroy the pen by attempting to pull the inpart out with pliers, but mine dried. If I don't write with it, don't you agree that it is too hard to accept as a regular pen?

On the other hand, a mentalist (PKer) or bizarrist could do well with this, since many mentalist/bizarrist effects focus on the phenomenon; not the performer. Steve
