Hi guys
Need some feedback from all of you I am looking at changing my routine for the Twin birds production. I am thinking of all sorts of ways to make it different from the traditional ways. Jeff McBride's told me to try the triple doves production for competition act.......they have all seen the double doves....I have heard of someone doing the triple doves production, but not sure who..any advise? P/S: If we are competiting at either international IBM or SAM contest...if all our routine all original(about 75%)...perhaps only 25% old ideas like twin doves, balloon to dove or dove splits..can we make the cut for top 3..? I have heard of doveworker doing the double umbrella to double dove productions....in order to be different, now I am doing trial for my double Harakhan cages(small cages with Norm Nieslen's latax canarys)to double dove production( all body load)...it seem very complex, but I am working on it...would appreciate if anyone have any idea or suggestion, please pm me. Thanks for reading & have a great day dove-boy |

As far as competing goes. I think It's all about how well you perform your chosen effects. Do you make that effect seem as if it is your own by tweeking it a tiny bit? Or do you just perform it straight out of the Tony Clark videos? My double dove production is a standard Channing/ Grant load. Even though it's standard, I've tweeked it to be my own by combining the 20th century silks, producing the vanished silk after I've loaded the birds, and then releasing the birds. I've very proud of this effect, because it's MY OWN, and the judges will appreciate the fact that I have done something with both effects that no one has ever done before. Try combining the double dove production with an effect that you don't normally see in a bird act. Harakan cages are great, But if you plan on competeing with it, keep in mind that they are far too overused. It's such a cool effect that every time someone competes with it, there are three people competing with it the next year.
Good luck- Jeff |

For competition, if you cannot come up with a unique new trick or act. Then routining is the next choice that may make the difference.
Also, know your act inside and out, be able to do it in your sleep without thinking. Confidence in presentation is also very important. Good Luck! |

I might be wrong but I read that Victor and Diamond have a dove video with a quadruple production. I have never seen it by the way, so shop at your own risk.

GOthike, you're not wrong. The quadruple production is on their Video "Secrets" from 1993. I've never seen it actually performed anywhere except on the Vid though.

Keep in mind that the quadruple production in the video is done with both Victor AND Diamond. He produces two ala double tied silks and she produces two more standing behind him. It is not explained in the video, but it isn't a real fooler either. Regardless, it probably wasn't explained because he doesn't want anyone doing it yet. As far as a one man act goes I have never seen more than two produced at once.

Norrab, you're correct. It does take both Victor and Diamond to perform the quad. I don't think it was meant as a real fooler but rather a flash appearance. That vid was made 12 years ago and noone has copied the effect as far as I know. I personally didn't think it fit into an act but was more of a demonstration effect.

Michael and Dave,
I agree that it failed the one-man dove act test. (For whatever that is worth.) More importantly, I am unaware of a very convincing routine where more than two doves are produced at once by only one magician. Like most dove magicians, I have done the twin dove production. Also like most working dove magicians I have dropped it from the act. I don't like the way it leaves me with too much in my hands. The two doves are easy to pass off but there is really nowhere to go with two silks and "extras" that still fits anything else in my show. I even tried rolling the "remains" into a ball and tossing them into the gloves to dove. The bundle is too large and "stringy" and why would I produce one dove after having just produced two? My show has gone back to one dove at a time just as I started decades ago. As a young magician in the early 60s I was very impressed with the elegance and simplicity of Mercer Helms. Perhaps if he had needed the work, we would have seen more than just the original HBO Magic Special with him. The best kept secrets in magic and the other entertaining arts stay too well employed for the rest of the trade to get to see much of them. Often what we see sells more to us than to real lay audiences. Normally, we copy so much until we think anything "original" to us is better. The real best stuff is not usually for sale or at conventions. But Lucy and I love conventions. For me now the twin dove production is only used as an MC bit where I can just walk off stage with it. It did not routine well into a show. It is a pretty but isolated trick. Those have their place too. (Before I introduce this next pair ...) Scheme! Bob Magic By Sander |

I agree that doing the double at the beginning of the act isn't the correct thing to do. As Bob said, why produce only one after you've produced two. Doesn't serve a purpose.

After thinking about this a while, I have an idea for putting the twin dove in the routine. During the show produce two doves that are vanished ("by your favorite method"). At the very end do the twin dove production to show that the doves have returned and that all is well. It also gives you reason to leave stage. Your hands are full.

I'm going to try it too. My first pal will come from Ribbons to Dove. She will be untouched the rest of the show. Later I will have a pal come from a newspaper and one from a balloon. Those two buddies of mine will change into a rabbit. Lastly my buddies will re-appear by twin dove production.
Does anyone know of a video showing triple dove production? |

Dynamike,
Sometime catch the "I've Got This Friend" part of our two hour stage show. The cage that Lucy and I use to reproduce the pair, would handle three. I got two of those from MAK in the 70s and had them refinished. I don't know the name of the prop but I also don't see them in use. No doubt, Michael Baker could build a better one. Apparently it is no longer available from MAK. (Being heavy is VIP!) Bob Sanders Magic By Sander PS --- I hope that you are enjoying the Newspaper harness. There are no more. I used mine several time last week. This week and next week I play "actor" so it will be May before I get to use them again. They even fool the people backstage! |

Yes, Bob, I enjoy the Newspaper harness. I am going to use the Newspaper harness for both shows I have planned at a school today.
My pal enjoys the Newspaper harness the most, especially because of the special material. He told me to tell you thanks for inventing such a comfortable harness. |
