Does anyone know where I can learn the card stab performed by David Blaine on one of his specials?
here is a description of the trick: David hands a spectator a new pack of card never been open. The spec is then asked to shuffle the cards face up so that everyone can see there is nothing wrong with the cards. Then the spec is asked to shuffle them face down. David then asks the spectator to spread the cards all over the table face down and pick one card. The spectator then shows everyone the card except for David. The card is then places back onto the table then the cards are gathered up again and shuffled by the spectator. The cards are then again spread all over the table. David then asks for a menu and places it over the cards. He then takes a knife and stabs the table and tips the table over and there is one card that the knife is going threw it is the specs card. thanks, dluong P.S. if anyone has a different card stab effect that you like please post the name of that one too (and a short description if possible) so that I can take a look at it. |

You'll need a friend who can spot the value of the card picked and they'll have to have a deck of cards in an order that they can find a dupe quickly in....
Here is one: 1.Control Card to Top 2. Spread cards tracking top 3. Stab card. or 1. Control Card to Top 2. Palm card 3. Have them spread 4. You continue to spread and add palmed card 5. Stab card etc... If you want to do something like Blaine, that's fine, but really you should come up with your own approach so you find something that works for you... no one can tell you what works for you! |

I can't recall seeing that particular trick by D.B., but if he did not handle the cards then it doesn't seem posible without an assistant, and even then it would be difficult.
I've used the Malini stab from his book, and also forced a card which had a duplicate under a paper. There are several methods in print but the basic ideas of Deags cover most of them. |

I heard that the whole trick is set up. It might be some camara magic were they edit out his part with the cards.

Without saying too much, as I could say more in the secret sessions.....the method which I learned is similar to Ammar's card on ceiling.

I would've thought that it was a no-brainer if Blaine would've done a card stab with an ice-pick during his 'freeze my ass off' stunt.

Did you notice that he cuts his finger when doing that? His hand slid down the knife and cut him quite badly. APparently he cant straighten out his pinky anymore. As for the effect itself, just watch the menu

Thanks for the help everyone...since you are all saying that he uses stooges...what is your favorite version of an impromptu card stab (w/ short descriptin if possible)?
thanks again, dluong |

I never said nor implied he used stooges....
Every laymen on camera was just a laymen, he may have had an unseen assistant hand him the menu, or perhaps the unseen assistant handed the menu to a server who handed it to Blaine... There is a difference between unseen assistants and stooges of course... if you performed the same method without camera's to a group of laymen, the effect would completly work. Anyway, the ones I mentioned were my favorites, but honestly this trick really is impractical when done as Blaine(spread out and stab) and isn't that much more amazing than most other card tricks... I mean, all you are really doing it locating their signed card after it's been lost, which you can do with many other effects .... just my opinion, but I never liked the card stab on a table. |

I was recording it, so I watched it three times, and although he could have had his hand over the card at one point, he casually tosses the menu onto the table and I didn't see a card under there. I was impressed with this and several other things he did. Like Daryl's Snow Shoe Sandwich. Not easy. Say what you will about him, but he's not that bad with a deck of cards IMO. That levitation crap just makes me mad, though. Robert Whoops. Just found my answer in Secret Sessions. This explains everything. Thank you Daegs. Robert |

A nice version of the card stab can be found in the book The Magic Of Malini and also on the video Commercial Classics with Johnny Thompson. In his version he does it with 3 cards and is totally impromptu. I perform this effect all the time and its always a killer and the effect can be strenghtend by having the cards signed.

I cant tell you how exactly it is done for fear of exposure but I am 99% sure of the method. It has everything to do with the menu he covers the cards with "to make it more difficult" and there is certainly the help of an assistant. No card controls are used but a pack of duplicates, I don't think there is anywhere that teaches it. You will have to watch the video/tv special and work the rest out yourself. Very good trick though.
