Does anybody else perform this effect? I sometimes have to give a warning before I perform it? Anybody else have this problem?

Pauly,
Why do you have to give a warning? Bob Magic By Sander |

Some people are very afraid of small animals that may poop on their head at any given moment. Kidding just sometimes I've noticed people actually being frightened by live animals appearing from nowhere. I think it might be a part of the Eric Mead philosophy when people don't get enough air to their head astonishment can be frightful.

Rule of Magic: Never tell what is about to happen!
exception: Unless it improves the effect on the audience. I am familiar with most of Gen Grant's dove magic and have not heard of wings on my finger. If you are scaring your audience with your doves. It may be time to look at what you are doing to frighten your audience. Maybe taping yourself and view with someone who will give you an honest review. Please, if you ask for advice, don't attack the person when they do give what they see. I have produced birds for many audiences and have never frightened any members of an audience. I did meet a lady once who was scared of birds. So I removed them from her area. This encounter was not at a show but more of showing someone my pets. Dove work is usually a stage magic or magic that should be performed several feet away. Therefore, you audience would not be close enough to make them feel that they are in any danger. |

Pauly,
From that prospective I can understand the "don't surprise me" group. There is one lady with the press that may have covered my performances a dozen times but she is afraid of doves or any other bird (except ducks). She puts the pictures in the media so she knows that doves are going to be there. I have learned to get her seated on my stage left to give her maximum distance from the doves. It works well for both of us. (Or at least it has for about the last five years.) I have also learned to provide her photos of dove productions. She will never shoot a photo of one! In over forty years of magic I still have never had a dove poop on anyone in the audience or on stage. (Rehearsal is another story.) Rabbits will wet anybody anytime. (I think some keep score!) Johnny Thompson says he quit using them for that very reason. I live in the South as you do. Many blacks are afraid of all animals and water. Therefore, I pick my assistants very carefully. (More whites than blacks seem to fear a balloon popping. Strange! No, whites hate noise.) Our job is still to entertain them. Bob Magic By Sander |

General Grants "Wings on my fingers" is a close-up production of a dove. Performed at a "table setting" it is a very nice production but as stated above, choose your audience members carefully. Some people are scared of birds. I am terrified of snakes! Produce a snake near me and I am gone! LOL

Hey Tony, you and me both. A few years ago my cat thought it would be a good idea to bring a garter snake into the house. Well, I was out the door in a flash. My wife took care of the snake. I like watching them behind glass or in a zoo but not up close and personal.
