I have been reading the shadow-digest today and it had an effect for the monkey paw. It was not what I wanted but it gave me an idea. Where can one get a monkey paw( I was also kicked out of the Zoo today )for an effect??

In my current lecture notes, I have the routine The Tale of the Monkey's Paw, based on the short story, The Monkey's Paw, by W.W. Jacobs.
For the paw, I got a wizened, small (monkey-sized) plastic hand one Hallowe'en. (From a toy store, not from anything alive!) I refer to it as a "mummified monkey's paw." I suspect it's going to be one of those things that you'll just have to keep looking for. Although you might go to Bizarre Magick (www.bizarremaick.com) and go to the Little Shops of Horrors link, for places selling bizarre magick artefacts. |

Greetings,
I made mine from a "lucky rabbits foot". Once the fur is gone - we used a solvent - it leaves a pretty nasty looking paw. This one is so bad looking, no one would touch it Sam Haine

Thankyou all. Will look for rabbit feet and check the local costume shop.

There's a store in Berkely called The Bone Room. They sell real dead stuff (insects, mammals, fish, and...yes...human remains).

Does anyone have any suggestions for what kind of solvent to use to remove fur from a rabbits foot. I thought Sam Haines idea was killer and picked one up. However, brute force to remove the fur is causing the foot to disentigrate and paint thinner did nothing to remove the fur.
Hoping for suggestions, Rob |

Cogliostro:
I remember that someone on the Shadow Digest recommended burning off the fur from the rabbits foot ... I haven't tried it though. You can contact him at: Broshad@aol.com While you're at it, ask him about his catalog for Bizarre MAgick effects and books. Magickally, Dave |

If you try to burn the fur off, be sure to do it outside! To remove the fur, I find that acetone is a good solvent to loosen glues, a source for small amounts used to be nail polish remover, but I cannot confirm at this time as I last bought a gallon of the stuff, and the nail polish remover may have changed formulae since last I bought it that way!
The bone room is a cool place if you ever get out that way-surprised me that the Berkeley folks allow it to stay in business, animal rights and all! I think that you might use some of the skeletal stuff form the Bucky Room bits, they have a scaled down skeleton that stand about 3 feet high (about monkey size I think) and you can buy just arms and hands or legs and feet from them! Take one of the small skeletal feet (monkey hands do look a bit like feet), nip the extra bits you do not want, dip in a few coats of latex or rubber cement, let dry, dip again, stick cotton balls on, pull off gently when dry, add a bit of acrylic paint for color and to matt down the cotton fuzz.

The monkey's paw...
That is quite an image. Just like the rabbit's foot is a reminder of an unlucky rabbit, does everyone know the facutal basis of this grizzly reminder?
...to all the coins I've dropped here

Actually, the basis for "this grizzly reminder" would be a bear paw!
But are you referring to the W.W. Jacobs story about the significance of the monkey's paw? |

You'll have to wait until the last week of next October to try my suggestion. Here in Dallas, a week before Halloween, we have a couple of HUGE Halloween specialty stores. They take up leasing residence for just one week. Much of whats in stock are big ticket items and yes even cat, rabbit, bear, and monkey paws.
One of my favorites last year was the 7ft. coffin with remote control lid. Push the button and the lid opened. Second push of the button and a skeleton swiftly sat upright, head turned towards us and began laughing with a loud shriek. |

I have a genuine monkey's paw which I got from a magician friend of mine. He got it from a supplier of biological artifacts. Since it was probably 30 years ago, I have no idea who it was. (The paw looks really creepy.)
The paw was preserved in formaldehyde. It took considerable work to remove the odor.
