Mr. Max Maven:
First of all, it is a great pleasure to have the opportunity to talk to you here at the Magic Café. You were my first reference in Mentalism, around 7 years ago. Today, I still do some effects I learnt from your VideoMind Series and the Color series. Thanks for your great contribuition. Now my question: Always, I have included in my parlor show 2 or 3 mentalism effects. However, I would like to do a full Mentalism Show. For the last 2 years, I've been preparing some routines for a 1 hour Mentalism show, but I have some concerns. (Tacitly, taking in consideration the regular entertaining techniques) How do you manage a complete Mentalism Show so the audience doesn't feel bored to see mental powers for about 60 Minutes? I'd appreciate your comments. Best Regards, Alejandro Kei. |

Obviously, choice of material and structure are essential, but even more important is the personality of the performer and his/her relationship with the audience. It's worth noting that not everything should last an hour. There are some activities that are better enjoyed in shorter (or longer) formats. In live performance, there are some terrific short acts that simply do not lend themselves to a lengthier timeframe -- at the ten-minute point they can create tremendous impact, but by twenty minutes in they've worn out their welcome. (That statement is not meant to be derogatory toward such acts; it is simply a factual observation.) It is also worth mentioning that the length of a performance is often dictated by the venue. For example, if you're doing a set at a restaurant table, that audience is probably not in the mood for a full hour show, even if every moment is superb. I realize the above doesn't provide the answer you want, but I hope it's at least a start in suggesting a direction. |
