I'm thinking of producing my rabbit for a finale but I wanted to know how long do you keep your rabbit in the compartment before having to produce him? I have a dove pan and my rabbit can fit in there. I'm thinking of keeping him in the pan (no cover only until the trick) there until the end of my show which is 30 minutes long.

This question is sure to stir up some emotions with a variety of performers. I have heard (but don’t endorse) people loading their animals as much as 40 minutes before the actual production. I would suggest using common sense and making sure that your animals have a great air source. In the end hopefully you have done your homework and tested the waters in your practice sessions to determine what your animals are comfortable with.
My doves when loaded are usually produced in LESS than 10 minutes at MOST- but I don't use a box or a dove pan so the animals have plenty of air (and are securely held). Hopefully your animal is a pet and not a prop so you will be more in tune with how your animal deals with the confined space. If the rabbit is sitting in an open pan inside a suit case table for example I wouldn't leave him there for long because he will probably get interested in something and wander around; possibly hurting himself and in turn giving you a reputation that you might not recover from. I agree with the others who think that your animal should be confined for as little as possible. Have you looked into re arranging your show to allow for the production? Perhaps an assistant can roll on a new table when taking one away? Just an idea. MM

Drill out the air holes in the lid of your dove pan to increase the airflow. Line the final pan with some terry clothe or felt (for the comfort of the bunny) and your rabbit should be able to stay safely and comfortably inside until you need him. Don’t forget rabbits love to burrow into the earth and are used to dark cramped quarters. Load him as late as possible; make sure the load is safely and securely placed. With enough air he will be OK in the load chamber.
I worry more about the typical slamming of the load chamber onto the pan more than the time length of the rabbit in the load chamber. The sudden movement and bone-jarring stop of the chamber may injure the rabbit. It will at least upset the little guy. Think about a different production. A simple production from a bunch of silks is as easy (technically) and uses a bag to hold the rabbit. He could sit in the bag most of the day without a complaint.

As long as they have air and don't overheat, you are ok.
Practice. Try it out at home and learn from it.

Personnally, I produce my rabbit about 10 minutes into the show. I make him appear from a "miror box". This box is quite large and has a lot of air holes in the back. It also has a cloth liner for the confort of the bunny. The reason I produce him in the begining of my show is simply that I don't want him to spend to much time in the box, even though he certainly seems comfortable in it!
I think a normal rabbit will tolerate being in a small space for a good amount of time, but be very sure not to over do it! If your bunny seems fidgety as you put him in the production apparatus, or if he growls (yes, rabbits can growl!), then you should probably re-evaluated what you want to do with him.... He is obviously not happy with the deal he is getting! Hope this helps! Louis Jutras |

Honestly, I'd think I'd keep the little guy in his traveling cage, have my wife do a coin trick, go to back office then load him in his box. I'd try to keep him in the TRICK BOX the bare minimal time.
