I see this book test come up from time to time on e-bay and was wondering if anyone has any experience with it.
I was looking for an inexpensive, fairly easy to use and effective book test. I've liked other Dusheck products, but have never heard much comment on this one. I'm also considering getting his "card magic" book, but once again, haven't been able to find a review. Any thoughts/opinions would be appreciated.

I have never seen Dusheck's card book before so cannot comment on it. However, his Famous Quotations is something I had the opportunity to look over when I was interested in it. My interest quickly faded. Did I mention the word QUICKLY? While I have not yet added a book test to my act, I will not be using this one. The book itself will not stand even the most cursory inspection. I would not recommend this for anyone with little or no experience in Audience Management.

I concur about the Dusheck book test -- lame, obvious, can't be inspected.
Try the impromptu Hoy book test (in The Bold and Subtle Miracles of Dr. Faust, an inexpensive book). Or invest in Larry Becker's Ultimate Flashback, which gives you lots of books and different strong effects. Jerry |

Famous Quotations sucks. I think the ad is very misleading. "You hand the spectator a book of famous quotes." YEAH RIGHT!

The Hoy book test absolutely!
No gimmicks, borrowed books, can even be done in a total stranger's home. I've done it and can safely say it fries people! |

Peter,
I'll look for the Hoy effect. Thanks for all the opinions guys. I did go ahead and buy the Dusheck card book because it was only $4 on E-bay. I figured for that, I wouldn't be losing out if it wasn't any good. I went ahead and ordered the Hoy book "Bold and subtle miracles" and have a question while I wait for it. Is the "tossed out deck" effect really as surprising as the description of it reads? And can the Hoy book test be good as a "one off" type of effect or does it need to be part of a longer routine to be really effective?

I have used Dushek's book test and actually I like it. It is NOT for a beginner as it does require some intestinal fortitude, it is NOT for a magic show to throw in and really should only be used by a mentalist with experience. For those that CAN use it, it will work great for them, for those that do "magic" (and this is not to sound derogatory) it will suck. But then again, HOY also takes intestinal fortitude to do and some real presentational skills to pull off the tossed out deck. Best to study "Harry Anderson Wise Guy" for the best Tossed Out Deck routine.

Thanks for the great advice, Paul. I'm looking forward to receiving the Hoy book and checking out his book test. I'm kinda glad you say it takes "intestinal fortitude" because those type of "Bold" effects are often the most fun to bring to a successful conclusion!

Flip, all of the Hoy stuff is powerful when performed by someone who knows how to present it. The Tossed Out Deck is one of the strongest pieces in all of magic/mentalism when delivered well. It is one of the worst when performed by someone who doesn't "get it" and thinks that the secrets are the most important part of magic.
The Hoy book test is an excellent impromptu test. As far as marketed tests, I like and have used Meir Yedids WOW #5 with good success. Also, Lee Earle's is very good. So is Maven's from his video trilogy. I haven't invested in the Backer or the MOABT because I'm quite happy with the ones I have, although I suppose that one day I'll get both of them, just because I hear they're very good. One that I have used on special occasions that I like a lot and have never seen anyone else use is Richard Osterlind's Seafire Sequence. This is a little different and a bit tougher to come by, and it is not for everyone (some mentalists would say it's magic, not menatlism, although I would disagree).

Quote: Could not possibly agree with you more here. I'm guessing a lot of Magi pass over wonderful routines because they feel the "secret" is weak or too obvious. Let's face it. You can be quite entertaining with nearly "self working" effects as long as the presentation is there. I would never dream of attempting something like a book test in the guise of a "magical effect". I couldn't imagine doing normal card/whatever tricks then sliding into a book test. That being said, I truly look forward to getting Hoys little book. If I don't feel I can strongly present the material therein, I surely will get some insight into the thinking of someone who really knows how to create strong effects of that type...
