Hi Max -
ok... so living in Australia we don't get to see much of your stand up work other than appearances on magic specials - show structure : What concepts and ideas do you approach your audiences with ? Are your shows an informative discovery of the mind - lecture? or... Are your shows structured from your most powerful pieces of Magic. How many effects would you perform in a show - does it consist of audience involvment for every effect. I guess I could picture you warming up with alternatives of 'bank night'? Do you russian Roulette - of some type? Do you blindfold? Is Maxes show a theatrical glam with background music to capture the moment. Do you enjoy lighting - downlit spots to enhance your feel and look>? Does Max end with Mystery... does he 'thank his audience' or simply perform something extremely powerful and walk off? I guess there are man questions here for you to answer... I do understand Mentalism and have read many titles including Basom Jones 'Magick' - which help performers structure Mindreading Shows? Hope to hear your response. Thanks Max - Michael Krantis |

My new show has an unusual composition. I had mounted a two-hour (with intermission) show back in 1988, which had a two-month run at a theater in Beverly Hills, and was remounted at two other theaters. I learned a lot from that (translating the nightclub interface into a theater context), and intended to do it again, but got caught up in other projects.
Two or three years ago, I decided to definitely do another theater run. However, as I began to re-examine the earlier show, I realized it made no sense to do that again, as it was an accurate reflection of my artistic goals and such as of 1988, but I have grown and changed since then. So, I pulled the show apart, and tossed out almost half of the mentalism material, replacing it with monologues that address people and topics that are interesting to me. Hence, the new show has far less mentalism than you might imagine -- five routines in the first act, and two and a half in the second. It is most definitely not a "lecture" format. There's blocking and lighting. I do use music, but only for walk-in and outro. I am past the point where my goal is simply to amaze my audience over and over. I know I can do that, so why bother, when I can use that as the starting point and take the audience somewhere new. I do not perform anything along the lines of Russian Roulette, because I don't find it plausible. My next-to-closing piece is an extended blindfold routine, honed over the last thirty years. I'm not sure how close this comes to answering your questions, but at least it's a start. |

Krantis,
Two articles about Max Maven's "Thinking in Person" were published earlier this year: MAGIC [January 2005] - article written by Wittus Witt GENII [February 2005] - article written by Dustin Stinett Both articles will give you an insight into the elegant construction of the show's structure. We can only hope that Max gets the chance to bring his show 'down under' one day. Regards, John Pezzullo Sydney AUSTRALIA
