Ace photos.. #7 is the scary one, that hand looks purple, and the veins.. owie. No wonder you came away with a poorly hand.
The tie does look fascinating though, under less intense circumstances I could imagine it being an interesting thing to have a crack at. Now you've done it once and seen the footage from the back (so you know the construction of the knots), do you find yourself wanting a return bout with this tie at some point in the future, to see if you can beat it by less extreme means? |

Congratulations David !!!! Sounds like things went really well.
China is an amazing place. I have done nearly 200 shows there over the last few years. You handled your challenges well. This is a lot harder when not understanding the challengers language and everything has to be translated. As an escape artist you always want to be one ahead of the people locking you up. When dealing with different languages it is easy to get behind the “eight ball” , so to speak. Your stories are so good and similar to my own dealings there, with the police, S.W.A.T Teams, and the Chinese Army. I could write a book on China and Asia escapes alone. I am sure the Bill Murray movie “ Lost In Translation” well have a whole new meaning to you now!!! Again great job! Dean |

Exciting stuff! Thanks David! Its that persistence that seperates an escape artist from those who can't. Thanks for the inspiration!

Hey guys
Thanks again for the support and good wishes. A new page of pictures (nearly 200 of them) has just been uploaded to that weblink, with more to come. http://www.thefreakshow.co.uk/china/china.htm Helen. Yep, number 7 shows the tie off well. I have been promised copies of a few great shots of that challenge, including ones of what my right wrist looked like afterwards. It looked a mess. Dean. Thanks for the thoughts Yeah, I did not have as much control of that challenge as I should have. It was a sticky situation which partly came about because of translation issues between myself, the promoters, and the TV crew. I had similar problems with the underwater escape I did there. Though that one did not go ahead until the problems were worked out! I am glad I did the challenge though. Beating something like that felt good, and won me a lot of respect with the Chinese audiences. Weasel, give me a call anytime. I have a TON of stories for you! Clyde, I appreciate it I wonder if you can tell what I am doing to the Chinese cuffs during the demonstration (which happened for the police only after the challenge). I have only published the pics which cover the details. Trevor, did I see somewhere that you are coming to the UK? Perhaps we can meet up, that would be fun. Enjoy the new pics. More to follow, with video when I get it. Cheers David

LOL Riley
They don't have English takeaways. But we did find a club/late bar that was called 'All Best Western Food'! Apart from serving chips and pizza's, they also had the craziest caberet shows on every night. One of the acts was a young guy who sang rock songs to a kareoke track (pretty well too), then he would scream loudly, and upturn a bottle of beer over his mouth. he would drink about half of it, then pore the rest on the stage. All the while screaming like a crazy person. he followed this by doing the same 'stunt' with two beers at once. Madness. This was followed by pole dancers (wearing clothes!), a torch song singer, belly dancing, more crazy beer drinking, and finally a winner takes all gambling game for a huge amount of beers. It was completly lunacy. David

Oooo. What did the gambling game entail? Cards? Coins? Something that we could have fun with?? >:o)
I am sure the pole dancer had clothes on? *skeptical look* Did you sing karaoke there? Sounds like a cool place. Regards Wolflock

The news heard round the world. I was at a magic meeting in Appleton last night where a magician started retelling David's story (set, however, in Asia and he could not remember the performers name) after the story I asked if it was China and David Straitjacket.
He said, yeah the guy had an unusual name and looked like Dean Gunnarson in his pictures. So MANY, MANY people are hearing about this one, congrats bro.

Wow Shawn, where had he heard the story? Looking like Gunnarson? I always thought me and Tom Lyon looked a bit alike myself, sorry Tom
Pubically challenged... Well spotted Daniel. I am glad my admission didn't go un-noticed, hopefully the treatment will work. No, there was no permanent damage from the rope tie. The feeling still isn't fully there, but the doctor said it is just a matter of time, nothing that will last more than another month or so. I have had to work on the fine muscle control on that hand, but that is all back to normal now. Trevor, the gambling game was with dice, they play it everywhere, bars, shops, in the street. I couldn't fathom the rules myself, and no-one I saw playing it spoke any english. I did get dragged into a game at a bar though where I kept winning, and the guy just kept handing me drinks, I couldn't lose, and I couldn't persuade him to let me buy him a drink, it was funny. And yes, the pole dancers were fully dressed. I didn't do karaoke there, it was just for the performer. However there was a karaoke bar near the hotel where we had lot of fun. I will write up the story of the underwater escape later today. Sorry that has taken so long. Cheers guys David

The guy retelling the story was Mike Schroder (Half of Mike and Chris the creators of Houdini Days) he said Chris had told him about it. That is all I know.
One of the other members (Stephen) had Santini's Bar Cuff at the meeting and Mike had locked him in, after escaping he was showing the red marks from Mike putting the Bar Cuff on so tight, that is when Mike recapped what I stated above. Shawn
