Does anyone have any experience with Losander's Dancing Broom? How do you like this prop? Is this best for stage or can it work in a parlor setting as well?

While I have not used the Dancing Broom - not my style - I have used his wand. They both use similar hook-ups. If it fits your act, then I would say you'll be pleased with the quality of the prop.

One idea that comes right to mind with the broom is doing a socerer's Apprentice type of an act or routine with it. It would fir perfectly into that.

Thanks for your note. I was wondering if this were mostly a stage affect or could be used for a couple of moves just a 5 feet away? I would imagine the quality of anything Losander released would be good. Kyle -- that's exactly what I had in mind. I actually began thinking of it as I read all of the earlier Harry Potter threads.

Kyle has indeed given an excellent rouinte idea. This happens a LOT!
*As to the issue of the broom being a stage effect or parlor: the issue is one of lighting and conditions. As will all levitation effects there are many many technical considerations. Kevin James has published some excellent advice on the conditions for such effects and Losander himself has given the real work on this on his videos. Go get em!

The wand is designed for all circumstances. I imagine you could use the broom similarly.

I saw him lecture last weekend. I was surprised how close it could be performed, although he was using a torch on a staff, instead of the broom. The light was actually quite bright.

That's great to hear. Dirk was lecturing in NJ not long ago and regretfully I had a travel conflict with work. I hope to have the chance to attend one of his lectures soon. He has really mastered this art.

I think that the dancing broom just lends itself to a lot of creative routines. If it was a magic cane dancing, then maybe that does not scream a theme etc. However, when you have a broom dancing that is an ordinary object people can relate to, it really does indeed scream that it needs a storyline and a theme and a character in order to give reason and purpose to the broom dancing.

Infact I think it lends itself well to a lot of possibilities. For example, what about a guy on the street or a janitor at a school who hates his life and things in general. A radio comes on and says.. hey you.. wanna be a magician.. well now you can.. if only you believe. He turns the channel and shrugs it off but magic starts happening to him even though he does not realize it. Maybe the broom dances with him as if coming to life and going back to a prom that he never had the chance to do.

These are just thoughts off my head, but you can see how one simple object can spark an entire theme and storyline just built around it. Creativity is everything. Give your audiences more.

Indeed! There is nothing as spectacular as when magic seems to come alive when you simply don't expect it. That moment of astonishment turns everyone into a kid regardless of any cynical impulses. It certainly is a gift for magicians to creatively make this magic happen as we all become believers even for a minute.

It is just always great when you can give your audiences something more to get excited about them just skill alone. There really are so many "layers" we magicians can place and add into our acts to add more entertainment value for the audience. It just takes a bit of effort and creative thinking on the part of the magician.

If you do this effect, it would be a nice idea to get Andrew Mayne's "Touching the Sky" and use Broom Flight from the book and then the Dancing Broom. It would be a little comedy.
