Can anyone tell me the difference between the Girl Thru Glass and Thru the Looking Glass illusions? I love the Mark Wilson routine and was interested in using this.
Thanks, Dan. |

The round Owen's version uses a rotating motion. The square version that's like the large "Dove through mirror" uses a vertical motion, triggered by placing the mirror into the frame. I think I've seen Wilson use both. Personally, I prefer the rotating one, as it does not require the heavy lifting!
Milwaukee magician David Seebach, who used to write for "The New Tops", uses it. He's very friendly and helpful. You might consider calling or e-mailing him for details. |

I also have an "Alice Thru the Looking Glass".
It actually packs smaller than the "Girl Thru Glass" and doesn't need stage hands to lift the glass/mirror up and onto it's stand. It stays on the stand at all times, and you or your assistant can work the gimmick with one hand. Hope this helps? Michael berends

Michael,
That is exactly what I was looking for. Are you happy with this routine? Thanks again! Dan. |

I performed "Alice" (round mirror) on Stan Kramien's illusion show and it always got a great reaction. I think the round mirror is more baffling to the audience. But, with the two tables, the slide and mirror in frame, it isn't exactly a "small" illusion - on stage or to pack. Keep in mind that when set-up the prop is about 10 feet wide on stage (with tables attached to each side of the mirror.) Impressive, but awkward if you don't have enough room on a small stage. Blocking the movements of everyone involved is important as it's easy to get "trapped" in front-of, or behind the prop during the routine and then have to walk all the way around the end of the table - not graceful!

I was considering using this routine in a large venue with a spectator but would be surrounded. Would this work?
Thanks again! Dan. |

Yes, Alice and Girl Through Glass can both be performed surrounded. I have owned and performed both. As mentioned previously, the Alice Through the Looking Glass is much easier to handle on stage. One of the previous messages mentions tables on each side of the mirror, but the Owen version uses a very clever stand that holds the board for the girl. She stands on it, and then it tips back in the horizontal position for sliding the girl through the mirror. Once the girl is half way through the mirror, the same stand is rolled to the other side of the mirror to slide the board onto. It is actually fairly easy for one performer to perform that part, although you may prefer an assistant to do the dirty work with the mirror while you misdirect by putting the girl on the board at the same time. There is also a slightly smaller Alice version made by Jim Sommers that is pretty good, but does not come with the special stand that I just described. One thing that is a little touchy with the mirror, and to some extent with the Girl Through Glass is fingerprints, cleaning scratches, etc. on the mirror or plexiglass. Especially on the Alice prop, it can give the illusion away if there are any smudges at all on the mirror during the "move". And it is very difficult to keep plexi glass/mirror clean, because simply cleaning it with a cloth can leave the tell-tale marks that give the illusion away. But either illusion is wonderful for effect to a lay audience and looks very impressive onstage. One of my biggest regrets is selling my Owen Alice Through the Looking Glass.

Hi All,
I got rid of the tables and crawled through it myself.....Looks something like the girl crawling through an Interlude.... It was a good reaction Looks pretty weird. I still have the prop, It's sitting in the shop collecting dust. My wife just mentioned it the other day and told me to get it out and put it back in the show. Mine can also be done surrounded.... I am not farmiliar with the effect enough to know the limitations. But for those of you farmiliar with Osborne's plans for "Girl Through Glass", can the plexiglass be replaced with a mirror?
If not, how about a one-way mirror? Would a backlight to allow the one way mirror to become transparent expose anything? I am working something in my head with the "girl" vanishing from one apparatus, and having her reappear by being pulled through a mirror. So I do not want her to be appeared prematurely through the glass. Sincerely, Wayne Stevenson The SpookClub |

Quick anecdote
When I was in JR High School, my friend and I, with the help of our tech ed teacher, bless his heart, helped us build a Girl thru Glass by the Paul Osborne Illusion Plans. Well, after 4 weeks, and some broken plexi-glass, he brought in the principal to "check things out". Well, it was a "disaster waiting to happen", and the principal banned the use of the illusion, as we were going to use it for the talent show. Not 4 months later, and AFTER the talent show, did Paul Osborne publish a blueprint in Genii called "The Passing Zone". A girl through glass effect with a 3' by 3' frame. S.O.B. "Progress always comes too late" - Alfredo (Cinema Paradiso) And to join the thread, I'd prefer the Alice thru the Looking Glass just because of the size. Unless you want the Passing Zone, that's cool too! It MIGHT have been in the 1996 Paul Harris issue. My mind's foggy. Quintana (KEEN-tah-nah) |

I picked up a pass to the Genii Archives and printed off The Passing Zone. I also found that James Rider had his version of "Girl Through Glass" in March 1980's Genii. Printed that off as well.
One thing I really do not like is the fact that all of Osborne's illusion plans in Genii were scanned horribly. I imagine it was bungled from the software that converts the pages into text. Made a big mess out of the drawings. But there's enough of a descirption that I can figure out in my head as to what goes on and come up with my own designs hopefully. It's been awhile since this last left off. I was pretty sure that it was the Paul Harris Issue because I always toted that one along with me to simply LOOK at the illusion plan.
Since then, a new mirror-penetration has evolved based on the same concept as Paul Osborne's (and surprisingly accredited to. Ethics in magic? Who'd-a-thunk-it?!) After showing the video demo to a couple ofclose laymen friends, the infamous "too-perfect" theory reared it's ugly head. "THAT part of the mirror moves? Did I get it right?" "Well, kinda. How does it move?" "I dunno, it just moves" It seems to me that in this design, it's more logical to cover the ENTIRE glass, so that no one section of the glass is under scrutiny. Alice thru the Looking Glass has the same kind of coverage, however, the top half of the mirror appears to be one entire mirror, and not divided into sections. So, if you're to build the Passing Zone, that's my 2 cents. Quintana (KEEN-tah-nah) |
