Saw the movie. Bought it. Now I am addicted to it. The music stays in my head, and I am starting to put together magic effects around it. I see instead of three shell game; I am thinking of painting the shells too look like mask!

Welcome to the club, I've been addicted since watching the play in the UK New Years Eve 1993, I've seen it twice since then, read the book yearly and have rented the movie, I'm too cheap to buy it, I wait till it is sold as a "previously viewed rental," the director was looking for "hot actors," this was in exchange for good singers, each actor had weak sining voices compared to the "live action" actors, in my opinion.
Many have done magic to the music or wrapped in a POTO theme to their show, I used to do a levitating rose wearing a black phantom mask. I did not use the music though.

"I did not use the music though."
Just as well. Using copyrighted music without paying the proper royalties...a practice that could come back to bite hard. I've been a Phantom buff for years (long, long before the Broadway musical version of the story). My collection includes the musical soundtrack, a restored version of the Chaney film on video, the Claude Rains version, the Herbert Lom Version, "Phantom of the Paradise," A reprint of the Leroux novel, the Aurora model kit and a cold-cast porcelain model kit of Chaney's Phantom in the "Masque of the Red Death" costume (removable mask and cavalier hat to show the Chaney face). This last Valentine's Day I gave my wife a box of chocolates with the "POTO Highlights" CD and a white 'musical-version phantom mask' attached to the box and wrapped with a red ribbon. She was ecstatic. Steve

I have been addicted since I was 7 years old when Max Schell played The Phantom in a made-for-TV movie (very well done, I might add). My dad recorded it for me, and it has since become an obsession with me. I have read the book 24 times (once a year since being introduced to The Phantom), own on video or DVD every movie version ever made, have the Broadway Soundtrack, and even played The Phantom when my High School did it as the "school play", and only because Lon Chaney did it, I created my own "Phantom Make-Up. I love The Phantom Of the Opera.

Yup, that ALW stuff is addicitive trash. Here's how to get over it:
1) Imagine it as sung by Billy Idol or Iggy Pop or Neil Young. 2) Imagine the songs being in different musicals. Try watching something with songs, like Mary Poppins and listening to the ALW stuff. 3) Don't feel too bad. It's not like you're imagination is filled with the sound of the Oscar Myer Weiner song playing again and again. 4) When you can catch a break, listen to some works of merit. From Neil Young to James Brown and Iggy Pop, there's other music out there for you.
...to all the coins I've dropped here

I've been a big Phantom of the Opera fan since I first saw the original Lon Chaney film as a child.
I've only had the misfortune to see the ALW fiasco once (in London no less). Shan't make that error again.

Dr Midnight, my statement, which you quoted, was a hint NOT to use it. I've spent good money and bought all the music I use, with some creative editing
Do you have the Chaney Phantom action figure that came out in the 70's or 80's? I have one it is in good condition out of the box if you'd like it.

I've been an Andrew Lloyd Webber fan for a long time, so I can usually be found watching Phantom, Evita, Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat (A fun musical with the amusing cast combination of Donny Osmond and Joan Collins), Jesus Christ Superstar (the original movie version is so much better than the stage version that was released on DVD), CATS, The Royal Albert Hall Celebration or Masterpiece in my spare time.
I also have most of his complete cast recordings on iTunes (When is "Starlight Express" and Andrew Lloyd Webber's version of "Sunset Boulevard" coming to theaters?). Has anyone heard the song, "The Heart is Slow to Learn", from what is intended to be the sequel to the Phantom of the Opera? |

X-treem,
Not looking to buy Phantom memoribilia at this time; thanks for asking. Sideshow recently put out an excellent Chaney Phantom figure. Polar Lights (Playing Mantis) also put out a new styrene Chaney Phantom model kit about 5 years ago, which I have, of fair quality (very light on detail work). If you haven't already guessed, my other major interest is figure model kit collecting and custom dioramas. Steve

If you are performing in a private home, church or school, you don't need to pay royalties on anything that is licensed through ASCAP, SESAC or BMI. If you play a venue that pays a fee to ASCAP, SESAC or BMI, your performance music is covered by their license. The time to worry is if you are performing in a venue where no fee is paid. Then the onus falls on you. This is not to advocate the wholesale ripping off of people's copyrighted music. But ASCAP, BMI and SESAC are not a bunch of jackbooted thugs that will kick your table over in the middle of a show or anything like that.

Or, with keeping to the POTO theme here, having a chandelier come crashing down on their head in the middle of their set

Did anyone ever tell you that you may need a "straight makeover?"
