Hiya, Magi:
Please note that while the following may seem distasteful to some readers, no disrespect is intended; I am generally empathetic towards the homeless and apologise in advance for any offense. At any rate, my son and I were at Togo's recently grabbing a sandwich, and lingered tossing crumbs for the birds. I remarked to my kid, "Don't throw out crumbs that are too big, because you'll attract homeless people." Said kid, of course, ignored me and continued tossing chunks of bread at the birds. Within a few minutes a man approached. He described himself as homeless and asked for some help...and my kid just stared in utter shock! I did what I could for the man, who then left. As he was leaving, my son leaned in towards me and whispered, "So, is that true about the breadcrumbs, Dad?" N.B.: In case you're wondering, the homeless guy declined my offer of a free sandwich and came back later and returned the jacket I'd given him. Leland |

I hate to say this is funny, but it does have it's humorous aspect.
We have a huge "homeless problem" in Houston, which is amplified by the fact that some of these "homeless" people aren't. And they are making a lot of money with their squeegees. While we were in Berlin in 1992, my wife and I were having a bit of American food at the Burgerkönig on the Kudamm. An emaciated woman wandered in and in a tremulous voice, pleaded "Sarajevo, Sarajevo." My wife turned to get her purse. I told her to sit still, that she didn't understand. The manager of the restaurant did, though. He grabbed the woman and took her outside "Weg, Du schmuzige Ziegeunerin! Und nimm deinen Sohn mit!" ("Get out, you dirty Gypsy, and take your kid with you!") When they were gone, I explained the scam to her. As soon as she touched her purse, the kid was going to grab it, run out the door, and that would be that. The Gypsies in Berlin were not like the "tame" Gypsies we know in the States. Later that day, I took her to Europa Zentrum, so she could see the hordes of busking Gypsies. Then she understood.
