What is the best trick that you have ever seen?
For me, it’s Penn & Teller’s "Shadows." If you have never seen this one live on stage I will not ruin it for you, but let me say that this piece of magic is so great, because it is unclassifiable – not an appearance or disappearance, not a prediction or an escape, not a levitation or a transposition etc… just a great piece of magic. In fact it is so unique that Teller has copyrighted it as a “play.” Teller discusses it in an article which can be found on their website here: http://www.sincity.com/teller/articles/teller.html |

The best trick I ever saw? That is a very difficult one for me. I have seen some great magic before, but I don't think any of it will ever out do the first magic I ever saw. I was a child on vacation in Myrtle Beach with my family. We stopped at magician's booth in a local amusement park. The guy there performed one effect for us with my help. He borrowed a quarter from my father and had me mark it. He then produced a hanky and put the coin in it and had me hold the coin over a tall glass of water. He pulled out a nest of coin boxes and told me to drop the coin. I heard the clink, and he whisked the cloth away. NO COIN! He then had me open the boxes until I found the quarter. I know how simple this effect is and am able to do it now. I even have the props to do it. However, I remember to this day the wonder and amazement that I felt then. I have never seen anything since that left me in such a state of awe. Not even Copperfield. Just my two cents worth.

Actually, I have two great memories of watching magic on TV. I remember seeing Derek Dingle perform Card Warp on a Barbara Walter's show called Not For Women Only... in the early seventies. I could not believe my eyes. I had to find that effect before it continued to drill through my brain. Also, in the real early seventies, I saw Don Alan on To Tell The Truth. He did his chop cup routine and I thought the guy was doing real magic. Then he had a giant steel nut appear under his hat and I thought they guy must be a warlock or something. It's a great memory.

The feeling that Greg and Samuel experienced is one that I too recall...with me it was seeing Out Of This World. It blew me away.
When we get into this crazy business I think we continue to search for another effect that will astonish us again. Isn't this the feeling we should all try to have our audiences experience. Sure we can make them laugh..have a good time etc etc...but to be truly astonished is one of the most memorable experiences ever. The search goes on. Best thoughts, John Smetana |

I am, regretfully, very tough to fool. Too literal I guess.
Very few times have I walked away saying "Wow!". However, one time sticks very strongly - Del Ray - and I don't even recall what he did. Later.... Steve |

John, you reminded me of OOTW. I was a young twelve year old magician and my other friend, who was also into magic, bought the two dollar instructions at Paul Diamond's. I remember being behind the school and he toasted my brain with that effect. I had no idea what had just taken place. Isn't it crazy... other kids have memories of smoking behind the school, but only a magician would have a memory of being smoked by a Curry effect.

In the late 1950s I remember seeing Al Koran on the television. He asked someone to deal the cards face-up and stop whenever they wanted to. He predicted the card they stopped at. It puzzled me for years (although I now know it was his Five Star Prediction). Nothing has puzzled me quite as much since.
