Hi everyone, I am working on some routines using Osterlind's BCS and I was wodering if anyone had any tips on setting up the deck from NDO. Tameriz describes a non faro way of setting up his deck in his book mnemonica. I am trying to apply the same principle to the Osterlind Stack. Someone suggested the Gilbreth principle. Any stack or culling sugestions?

I can't help you, but it seems to mee that ou try to run without being chased. The BCS is as random a stack as any shuffled deck, so why would you shuffle yourself into it. WHy not just take the deck out and ribbon spread it face up so everybody can see it is shuffled, then do some false shuffles and hit them hard.
Want kind of magic are you doing since you need to start with an entirely new deck of card in order to convince your crowd that there is nothing fishy? Or do you have a fancy false shuffle routine from new deck order to begin with - what purpose are yopu looking for to go from NDO to BCS??? Maybe your purpose could inspire us to think in alternative ideas and maybe help you out from another angle. |

I have a routine where I start the act with three sealed packs and have the audience choose a pack and break the seal and then hand me back the cards. I like this approach because it makes the audience assume that I am not using a trick deck, and they see that the deck is in NDO. I then do a few false shuffles and controls for an ace effect and some poker deals. As I am going along I am trying to stack the deck into the BCS stack so that I can end the routine with a little mind reading routine.
This is where I am having the problems. Tameriz describes an anti-faro method in his book as an alternative to setting up his deck if you did not want to do some many faro shuffles. I have tried to even apply binary math to this problem and tried culling the cards using that principle. It just seems like I am hitting a wall. If I can accomplish this then I know that I can apply the principle to other routines like a Sam the Bellhop routine where I can stack the deck for that routine. I know that people will say, that I should just do a switch, but I think that is to easy an out and I have this stuck in my head to try and accomplish it this way. I guess I am too stubborn in that case. |

Maybe you should get over your stubbornness.
You're developing a routine backwards. You've got a method you want to use, yet no context. Ok, so you want to perhaps do some mind reading or clairvoyant-styled effects after your poker deals (which you might want to think about the hypocricy those might appear to have), but you feel you have to use the BCS. Don't get me wrong, it's a great stack, but there are probably alternatives that would suit you better here. A few forces, glimpses, or psychological principles would go leaps and bounds here. The BCS is better when either started with or switched in. -Christian

Dear Imfletcher
ive been trying to the same thing..but I'm close to giving up - the reason is the BCS itself..its begun to seem impossible for me work out a faro method of NDO to BCS because of the sequence in BCS...you cant NDO 3 tens in to the sequence spaced with a jack etc. also from the NDO the aces and twos go in all sorts of directions...culling may be the way but it could take 5-10 minutes of other routines to get there?...im not sure ive looked in to all the faro/culling/single card moves needed but it is hard! dunno if it helps but not on your own! matth |

It is absolutely perfectly legitimate to want to start an act with a new unopened deck. I do so often, with a deck the client brings. So do a number of the top names in magic.
It is also perfectly legitimate to start with an opened, stacked deck. I do so often. Lots of the big boys do that as well. It depends on the ocassion and how you & the client want it. There's no absolute right or wrong here. But because someone chooses to go a different route than you on the matter desn't mean they are "running when not being chased."

I think that getting from new deck order to BCS must be an extremely tortuous process, and may destroy the effect of spontaneity you are trying to achieve. If you manage it, people would pay for the solution!
However, two more straightforward routes - 1) Get into Si Stebbins order using Darwin Ortiz' Si Stebbins secret, or 2) Rig your "unopened" deck by slicing the cellophane, unpeeling the sticker, stacking the deck (re-adding the advert cards and jokers would be a nice touch), replacing the sticker and the cellophane. A little fiddly, but peanuts compared to the problem you've set yourself! Tim |

Thank you for all of the input. I will keep everyone posted on how it goes. I know if it were easier someone would have figured out a way by now.
