Just a note to y'all.
Discover Magazine has an article this month on Diaconis and card shuffling. Here's the link. http://www.discover.com/current_issue/index.html Ihe infamous faro. it has pics of a deck of cards w/the word "random" written on the side. it shows the arrangement of the cards after each shuffle. As you all know the physics of the faro, "random" comes back into view. Anyway the article is short yet sweet. Just thought y'all would like to check it out. Peace |

Many thanks for the tip--anything by Persi Diaconis is worth looking at. And welcome to the Café.
There are 10 kinds of people: those who understand binary numbers, and those who don't.

You're very welcome and thanks. I also like your quote about binary numbers... very witty. Anyway, it just reminded me about an old article by Dai Vernon in some ol' magazine(can't remember right off hand). It was about how he found a startling relationship between the faro and binary numbers. That's all I can remember right now but I'll try to dig up the article and post later.
