Hey gang, I was looking at some alternatives to the high cost of health insurance for self-employed individuals, and was wondering if anyone has checked out http://www.samaritanministries.org/ It's an alternative to insurance for Christians, and runs 195.00 a month for a family. You actually send your money to other Christians in the network. I know of one person (not a magician) who has used it, and says they love it. Has anyone else heard anything about them, or tried them themselves?

This sort of thing has been tried before, and utterly failed.
Please, just because it has the word "Christian" attached to it, don't risk your family's security by depending on a shaky scheme like this ... pay the money and get real insurance! |

Trust me, I'm at least far enought along in years to know that simply because something has a title attached to it, it doesn't necessarily make it good. Sort of like the words "Christian" and "Magician".

I don't know anything about that particular organization. I know christian illusionist Toby Travis uses and recommends Christian Care Medi-Share. (http://www.medi-share.org) At least at a glance, it looks similar.
Toby has had some sizeable medical bills, and it has worked for him. |

Yes, they're another organization that I've heard of. A little more expensive though.

My wife (in the late 1990's before we were married) participated in such a program The Christian Brotherhood newsletter, located right here, and run by a fellow who was founder of a local church in our area.
It seemed extremely successful for a time, lots of PR, and lots of Christian signing up, and she got some releif from some claims she shubmitted. but greed apparently took over, and feewer and fwer claims were able to be covered, and finally the organization was legally reorganized. It may even still operate. But Larry Burkett questioned it's long term success. And he was right. There is no such thing as a free lunch. And if it sounds too good to be true, it probably is. Anyway that is my (our) experience with this sort of thing. It sounds good, and if there was no greed involved it could work. But how many times have we seen money seduce even the strongest Christian? BroDavid
If you stand for nothing, you will fall for anything.

I've found Extend Benefits has a good structure for handling medical insurance.

That's just what I needed Scott, thanks for the link. No insurance while I'm going to school and adding in that a dental cleaning costs $50 in Boston, a filling $70 and I have to get my wisdom teeth pulled. I really need a health insurance/dental plan.

Eric, the organization you alluded to is, I believe, currently being investigated by several State's Attorney's General for fraud and violation of insurance regulations. I'm licensed in Illinois as a life insurance broker (I don't do health or acident, yet) and, when I see things like, the little hairs on the back of my neck stand up and I tend to remember the Robot from Lost In Space (the TV series) sqawking: "Warning, Will Robinson! Danger!"
Not a professional opinion, just a personal expression from my own gut-check on the look I had at their offering. Lee Darrow, C.H.

Yeah, I'm gonna check out extend benefits that Scott mentioned. I'll see what kind of rates I can get with them. If they don't work out, I'll probably just go with Anthem or Sentera.
