I often use my variation of Sankey's "Leaving Home". It is fast and visual and it makes me smile when I watch it in the mirror. (oh, yeah, the spectators reaction is great too!)

What about pen through bank note?
It immediately involves something of a spectators and therefore arouses interest |

Plus you are delaying the magic by waiting for someone to decide to give you the money and eventually get it out. I'd vote no on this suggestion. |

Maybe something with flash paper...or something really similar to it. It'd be a nice transition to a production or something.

Consider the "Atomic Bills", I use it all the time as an opener, It fries them & gets them wanting more right away. Also because it's money, they have an "immediate interest". There is a thread on this under "tricks & effects". I hope this helps!

My hand goes up for the sponge balls!! I use the purse frame to bring out the sponge balls works great for me. IF I just want a change I'll bring out the jumping knot and do that. (yes in a walk around situation LOL)
Enjoy!! Joe comet |

Precious Metal by John Zander: a spoon changes into fork. Can be played as a spoon-bending that goes wrong. Gets great reactions.

I also love the jumping knot and use it table to table (well not tables directly next to each other). I use it on different sides of the room. I don't ever use it as an opener...I just don't feel that it's strong enough for an opener.

Well, another vote on All Screwed Up, also one on Precious Metal from Mr Zander.
And another one to contemplate, that I use, is Copper/Silver/Brass, of the Johnson (preferably) or Stirling type, using Doc Easons presentation again... that guy's good! When you don't do a "magic set" often you get a lot of openers! Paul. |

Whatever you do, start big...end big!
That's the part where spectators will normally remember anyway |

You might want to try 'A Fistful of Dollars' by Greg Wilson. The effect is a flashy production of 3-half dollars and vanish of the same. Fistful resets automatically and is not difficult to do.

Okay, Im scared to put this out there but, in the name of magic and all that's sacred Micro Macro as an opener, Ive been doing this effect for 20 years and it never failed, this effect they will talk about. man, that was hard to write.
I'm not looking to be a big star in magic
and that's working out REALLY good so far. |

I can still remember when 40 years ago a magician put one sponge ball in my hand and one in his. He then made his go into my hand. I couldn't sleep for a week until I had enough money to purchase this trick. I've since learned much more sophisticated magic but can think of few mysteries that have had the impact of the sponge balls.
As magicians we forget how some of the most simple effects can create tremendous impact on people who have not seen these effects before. I vote for sponge balls. It packs small, plays big and can be done under any circumstances. The huge response you can get from a quick sponge ball routine will then set you up for more elaborate routines. It is the perfect opener. |
