Got any tricks that happen in a matter of seconds? If so what do you do to make them funny?
I use the Jeff McBride quick silks trick. Very simple and quite effective. I will usually start my show with this trick set and ready. I enter the stage acting like I need to really sneeze bad. Looking around for something to catch my sneeze, I approach the audience members. Then with one big breath of air, as if to sneeze, I activate the silks and "Prestone!" 2 hankies! (I know it's 'presto' but I like to mix words up on stage.) Then I really don't sneeze that loud at all. I daintily wipe my shnozz and pretend the silk is stuck to my finger. If you’re in an adult crowd, after sneezing I usually say "Dang, there goes 10 bucks" That line might go over some heads. But still funny. Total time-max: 30 seconds If your not familiar with Jeff's use of the trick, it's more or less the lowest costing trick with an amazing effect...lets just say rubber bands and silk can work wonders with the use of your inner elbows. *PM me if you need a hand with this one. Have fun and enjoy it if you like it. |

I've used the McBride Silk Appearance as an opener and it gets a great response. There is really no other place than an opener. I’m sure you know what I mean. I like the comedy aspect you add to it but only a biker crowd would appreciate the $10 bit. If it works for you, use it. I perform for adults and children and I know some adults wouldn't respect me after such a comment. But like I said, if it works for you....
I have experimented with the McBride silk appearance and discovered I didn't need the rubber band attached as he does it. If I simply make 2 wraps from a broken rubber band around the silk and load it the same way, it will shoot out and up, and I catch it as it "flutters down". I then immediately go into a silk juggling skit. The misdirection of the loaded silk shooting up allows me time to pull 2 other silks from my pockets and juggle. I then make a comment "I'm glad I didn't buy the bowling ball or piano version" For those of you that would like a visual of what I'm doing...I am standing with my hands clean and clear and a silk just shoots out from my fingertips from my totally bare hands. What the audience sees is in less than 1 second, I go from clean to three silks being juggled. They have no idea where any of them came from and it's nearly a perfect production of 3 silks. I move on to a silk to cane effect.... but that's another thread. |
